Originating from the Alpine regions, Brown Swiss cattle are known for their impressive size, and Tommy is a towering example.
His journey began when Fred, a farmer with a talent for nurturing calves, rescued him from auction in 2010.
Named after Tom Brady, the iconic quarterback for the New England Patriots, Tommy carries the legacy of greatness in his name, embodying the spirit of a true GOAT (Greatest of All Time) in more ways than one.
While some might see Tommy and think “dinner,” those who know him understand he’s much more than that.
Laurie, Fred’s daughter, is quick to emphasize that Tommy is a cherished family pet.
“People frequently joke about eating Tommy, but he’s going to be buried on this farm when his time comes,” she states firmly, underlining his status as a permanent member of their family, not a meal.

According to Laurie, “Despite his size and his enormous horns, Tommy has a calm and peaceful demeanor.”

Being a steer, Tommy’s calmness might also stem from his lack of bull-like aggression, making him a manageable and affectionate giant.
Tommy’s gentle nature isn’t just appreciated by adults; he’s a hit with the younger crowd too.
His ability to lower his head, allowing even the smallest children to pet him, shows his gentle awareness and care.
Laurie notes how Tommy always keeps an eye on Fred, demonstrating the deep bond and love he shares with his caretaker, making him an exceptionally friendly and lovable animal.
Feeding Tommy is no small feat.
This hungry steer eats three times a day, consuming about 30 pounds of dry grain, over 75 pounds of hay, and an astonishing 35-40 gallons of water daily.
With an appetite that big, it’s clear Tommy is not just any ordinary cow; he’s a grazing machine with a thirst to match!
Despite his love for roaming and snacking on fresh grass, Tommy has faced his share of hurdles, particularly with a sore foot.
Laurie shares that they’ve enlisted the help of hoof experts and veterinarians, but healing is a slow process for such a large animal.
Through it all, Tommy’s resilience shines as he continues to enjoy his life on the farm, albeit at a slower pace.
When he’s not munching on grass, Tommy indulges in his favorite snacks.
He’s particularly fond of apples, which Fred generously provides by spending all his money at the market.
Tommy’s also adept at shaking down wild apple trees for a treat.
And when apples aren’t available, he’s more than happy with cinnamon buns or carrots, showing his sweet tooth and easy-going nature.
Tommy’s days are filled with simple joys, like taking long naps and chewing cud.
As he’s aged, he’s slowed down, but his purpose remains significant.
Laurie explains, “Tommy’s job is to keep my dad young and active,” highlighting the special role Tommy plays in their lives.
Fred, nearly 80, shows the vitality and activity that caring for Tommy brings.
The story of Tommy and Fred has touched hearts worldwide, culminating in recognition by the Guinness World Records.
