Canada is an interesting place. With a large land mass and low population density, much of the country is devoted to frigid northlands and farming districts. During a cross-country drive, most of the landscape consists of plainlands and fields. For some, it’s pretty boring— but most Canadians have come to appreciate its beauty. Take Dave, for instance.
Dave was driving through Millbrook Ontario, a tiny township with a population of about 8,000 people.
Along his drive, he noticed a gorgeous heard of brown cows cooling off from the heat.
As an animal lover, Dave decided to stop and film the herd for a while. But when he turned on his camera, he was greeted with a surprise. In the video, viewed nearly 5 million times, Dave captures footage of a cow named Flo acting rather strangely.
The large cow stands near the electric gate, digging at the ground and mooing in distress. At first, Dave was perplexed— but he quickly realizes Flo needs his help.
When Dave walks over to get a closer look, he notices a baby calf in tall grass near the farm’s perimeter.
In the video, he explains:
“The cow [Flo] had delivered a calf beside the electric fence.”
“It slid down the slope and under the fence.”
According to Dave, the calf had been lying in the hot sun and was in desperate need of milk.
He knew he had to save it, but he was also worried about Flo’s reaction. He didn’t want to upset her or cause the cow to charge.
He approaches slowly and grabs a stick to raise the electric wire.
He needs to squeeze the baby back under but is still worried about Flo. “He is no brave farmer,” the video text reveals. “And wires won’t stop an angry momma.” Despite his fear, Dave slowly nudges the calf back under the fence.
As David works, Flo seems anxious. She begins to paw the ground more furiously, letting out anxious moos. David and the calf are both getting shocked— and he prays the baby won’t cry and upset its mom.
With a bit of persistence, David manages to save the calf’s life.
After helping the baby, Dave immediately alerted the owners of what had gone on. Upon hearing the news, they checked and tagged the calf.
At the end of the video, Flo and the baby recognize David. They approach their human savior with a heartwarming ‘thank you’ in their eyes.
Since being uploaded to YouTube, Dave’s amazing rescue has been viewed over 4 million times. People love the way Dave selflessly helped the baby; comments on the video read:
