In one of the coldest cities in Sri Lanka, one little puppy was desperately trying to get the attention of passers-by. But the poor little thing wasn’t having much success. With the weather being so chilly, people moved quickly through the city with their only motive being to get inside and feel warm again.
But for the puppy, she didn’t have any place warm to go to. She lived out on the streets and the cold weather was chilling her to the bone.
Luckily, Lek Chailert and some fellow rescuers from Elephant Nature Park happened to be passing by one day. They were in the city for an elephant research trip, so it was probably a surprise to them when they stumbled across a completely different type of mammal who needed their help!
The team posted a video of their encounter onto YouTube via elephantnews. Their heartwarming story received over 400,000 views, making this adorable pup a little online celebrity.
They explained in the caption:
“Three years ago our team visited Sri Lanka for an elephant research trip, and on the way we stopped in the area called Nuwela Eliya, which is the coldest city in Sri Lanka. In the market through fare, where thousands of people pass, we saw a little puppy wagging her tail at passersby, inviting people to take note of her.”
Lek and his team were as busy as the other passers-by, and although they noticed the pup, they stuck to their mission and intended to leave her behind.
“One by one people rushed unaware of the pup’s plight. Our team stopped to pat her for awhile, but we also were in a rush to go. She began to follow us, and quite far, until we lifted her up and returned her to where we first met her.”
However, the sweet girl wasn’t going to give in that easily. She was cold, hungry, and tired, and she just wanted a loving home that she could snuggle up in.
“She followed us again and again, until her determination won our hearts.”
The team wanted to help in whatever way they could, so heroically, they put their work on hold and began to try to get her adopted. But sadly, no one was interested in the sweet little pup.
“We decided to ask people who walked past to adopt her, to take responsibility for her care. When they saw that she was female, they lost interest.”
Luckily, the puppy’s story has a happy ending.
As a last resort, the team asked their driver, Thushara, to look after her – and he agreed.
“We bought a new blanket for her and bathed her, turning our luggage into her bed while she stayed with us in the hotel. I think that this was the first night that she can sleep warm and peaceful. We named her Lek Lek.”
Lek Lek now lives a comfortable life with Thushara and finally got her wish of being adopted by a loving family. The team concluded:
“Today she stays happy and healthy with our friend in Sri Lanka. Thanks to all friends who are part of this story. We can always change one life from our care.”
