We all know the story of Noah and the Ark. A man who built a boat and had all the animals of the world join him as it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Well, Noah isn’t around to give us all the details of that story, but one man known as “Black Noah” has dedicated his life to saving as many animals as he can.
Calvin Tucker is a hero in the Alabama rescue community, having saved over 100 individual animals.
Calvin wasn’t even aware that he was a “cat” person until as recently as 2017. Through one little experience, Calvin had his perspective change on animal rescue. While sitting at work one day, a little gray kitten came up and started meowing for help. When Calvin saw it, his heart went out to the little thing.
“The way he looked at me, it touched my heart,” Tucker told The Dodo. “So I went back inside and got some crackers and fed them to him. The next day, when I got there, he was waiting for me at 7 a.m.”
The little kitten was the spark that lit the fire for Calvin.
After that, Calvin spent a lot of his time looking to save other animals. One of those animals was recently saved by a “feeling” that ended up turning into a lifesaving decision for one dog. It all happened while Calvin was driving.
“It was Friday evening, and I was heading home and for whatever reason, something just spoke to me and told me to get off the expressway about six exits before my home,” he recalled. “When I got off the freeway and turned on the main highway, I saw Wrinkles immediately. He was in the middle of the road, he was scared, cars were coming, honking at him.”
When Calvin was driving on the road, he just got a sense that he needed to get off.
That strange feeling that we have all had at one time or another prompted Calvin to get off the highway early. That little decision could have been viewed as an annoying occurrence, only this time it was going to save the life of a little dog. When he saw the distressed dog in the middle of the road, he knew he had to act fast. Getting a can of food, he was finally able to get the dog to come to him and out of the road.
The dog was in incredibly bad condition.
When he was finally able to see the dog, it wasn’t a good sight. Most of his hair was gone and he was thin and wrinkly, mostly due to the skin condition. Despite the rough shape of the dog, it immediately fell in love with his savior. Getting the dog into his car, he was able to get him to the vet for help.
The rough condition improved over time thanks to the rescue and care from some wonderful people.
Once at the vet and on the table, the dog wouldn’t stop looking at his new friend.
“He laid on the table and we just looked into each other’s eyes and the only thing I saw was that he was happy to be off the streets,” Tucker said. “You could just see the gratitude in his eyes the way he looked at me — he was just at total peace.”
The dog’s fur slowly grew back and he was adopted by a wonderful couple.
The beautiful story shows us the value of listening to that little voice that we all have inside of us. Maybe it could save someone’s life.
