It may sound like a very weird thing to say, but Jason Belisha was happy that his car broke down a couple of weeks ago in a parking lot in Georgia.
While he was dealing with inconvenient car troubles, an adorable and small little furball approached him.
The four-footer, a small gray kitten, lived on the streets and was desperate for help. Jason heard a couple of meows in the parking lot where his rental car broke down, and it didn’t take long before he found the poor, wet and malnourished feline.
“I looked left and right and then finally under the car next to me, where I found the poor little guy soaking wet and all alone,” the man said to The Dodo.
Right away, the two of them had a great connection. The kitten, who he later named Popeye, wasn’t scared of him at all.
In fact, Popeye was more than happy to come closer and get into Jason’s arms. You could just tell that Popeye really was in need of some attention and tender loving care.
Even though Jason had to deal with the car troubles and had to return his rental car quite soon, he decided to change his plans and try and rescue this kitten.
He decided to take Popeye with him and take the cat to the shelter so that he’d get some proper care.
Jason says that everything happens for a reason, and luckily, his car troubles resulted in him finding this poor kitten.
“It’s moments like this that I tell myself, ‘This must be happening for a reason,’” the man told. “And if I were a homeless kitten I would want someone to help me.”
Right away, Jason made a phone call to his car rental agency, explaining that he’d just found a stray kitten on the streets. He asked if he could use the car for just a couple of hours longer, which would give him plenty of time to drive Popeye to the nearest shelter.
Fortunately, the car rental agency was more than understanding and made no problem of it at all.
However, the local animal shelter didn’t have good news for Popeye.
Because Popeye was already a couple of months old, the shelter didn’t have room for him as they figured the cat would survive on the streets all by himself. In other words, Popeye would just stay homeless.
“They told me that since he’s older than 3 months, they would put him back on the street where I found him because he could probably survive on his own,” he told. “No thank you!”
The kind man who found Popeye didn’t want to hear any of it. There was just no way that he could leave this poor kitten, especially because he was convinced that Popeye needed to be found.
As for the kitten himself, he didn’t want to be separated from his new best friend at all. He always wants to snuggle with Jason and he feels extremely comfortable with him.
“He would keep screaming except for when I held him in my arms.”
The shelter did give Jason a carrying case, although Popeye would just end up sitting on Jason’s lap the whole time anyway.
The two then spent the entire day together while Jason was doing his planned activities. Before heading home, the man made sure to make a stop at the pet store to get Popeye some food and other essentials.
Popeye also immediately got along with Jason’s adorable corgi pup, Goose.
“They were instant buds, like a miracle.”
Popeye no longer had to worry about food or shelter and he finally knew what it felt like to be cared for. The cat’s personality further shined as he became even snugglier. He also loves to take naps along with Goose.
Unfortunately, Jason knew that he wouldn’t have the time or the resources to take care of Popeye permanently, even though the two have an undeniable connection. The man works as a freelance musician and photographer, which can make things at home a little bit difficult.
He wouldn’t be sure that he’d enough time to give the adorable Popeye all the attention he deserved.
Luckily, one of Jason’s friends fell in love with the kitten and wanted to take him in.
“One of my dear friends reached out and said she had a place for him if I couldn’t keep him,” the man told. “I took the opportunity and brought him over before I got too attached to him. Given another few days, I would have gotten irrational!”
Even though Popeye has found a warm and loving home somewhere else, Jason and Popeye still keep in touch. Popeye’s new owner even sends Jason videos from time to time so Jason can see what the cat is up to.
“He was a joy and a pleasure to have around,” he added. “Goose and I will miss him a lot, but he’ll always be close by at my friend’s place … and his new mom sends me videos all the time so I know he’s OK.”
