Meet Mami: a sweet cat who has the most sorrowful pair of eyes in the world.
A woman found Mami abandoned in a dumpster in San Francisco. The woman was shocked when she found the kitten, and after her tough beginning, she knew the kitten deserved a good home. And so, the woman called up her friend Sinead Schaefey, a huge cat lover. Sinead and her partner Riley quickly agreed to take in the little kitten.
Mami’s first few days with Riley and Sinead were rough.
The kitten was scared of everything and everyone. Mami hid underneath the couples’ couch, and she refused to let her new parents touch her. She hissed at them whenever they got close to her. Riley and Sinead tried everything they could think of to calm Mami down, but nothing worked.
A few weeks passed, and Mami was still nervous around her new parents. And so, Sinead and Riley decided to try getting Mami a sibling. They hoped having another cat in the house would help Mami relax.
Sinead and Riley decided to adopt a tiny kitten named Morty.
Morty was the runt of his litter, but he even though he’s small, he has tons of energy. Morty quickly fell in love with his parents, and he also loved his big sister Mami.
At first, Mami was wary around Morty—whenever he ran up to her, she would retreat. But over time, she began warming up to her new brother.
Soon, the two cats were inseparable!
Morty helped Mami come out of her shell, and he taught her how to be a cat. Morty is a very vocal cat, and he taught Mami how to meow to tell her parents that she wants something. Morty also taught Mami how to play with toys.
Most importantly, Morty was able to show Mami that their human parents love them.
Mami saw Riley picking up Morty, and at first, she watched warily. But when she heard Morty purring, she realized that there was nothing to be afraid of.
Now, Mami’s eyes may still look sorrowful, but Mami herself is as happy as can be!
Mami has bonded with her parents, and she loves cuddling with them. She also enjoys napping with Morty in their cat tree.
“She’s like a mom to Morty,” Sinead said in a YouTube video. “If he starts meowing she gets up to see what’s happening to him. If anyone touches Mami or picks her up, he’s right there at your feet investigating what you’re doing…. It reminds me of growing up. You feel like you have a sibling, but you’re also friends.”
