It’s deeply saddening that many people who take on the responsibility of a dog end up returning them to a shelter. Dogs rely on us humans to enjoy the happiest short lives they’re capable of, and it’s heartbreaking when an owner decides they simply don’t want their pet anymore.
Luckily, many stories of animal abandonment end happily – like the story of two pit bulls who were dropped off at a shelter at Houston, Texas, with no explanation from their owner.
The frightened pair arrived at the shelter looking like they had nothing left in the world but one another. Judging by their nervous behavior, they had never experienced anything close to love from their previous owner.
Luckily, there was a lady who was desperate to teach these dogs what love looked like. She jumped to the chance of fostering the dogs with her husband and brought them home immediately.
The dogs had been through horrors that nobody would ever know, and, as a result, they were both timid and scared – especially Louie, the smaller black pittie. On the journey home, Bridget, the larger pittie, stood over Louie as if protecting him from harm.
It seemed that Bridget instinctively knew what a happy home should feel like, as she jumped straight up on her foster mom’s couch and started wagging her tail as soon as she arrived. There was hope that these beautiful animals would be able to live calm, loving lives from now on.
As Louie and Bridget weren’t used to being in a home, their foster parents had to help them learn everything, from crate training to teaching them how to sit. But it didn’t take them long to get used to their new surroundings, and their foster mom recalled in a video for The Dodo how “amazing” it was to see how the pair opened up during that time.
Louie and Bridget’s foster parents had a couple of dogs of their own. Though the nervous pair had probably never interacted with other dogs before, the four dogs soon became close friends.
“The moment they ran outside and started playing with them, I knew they were going to be okay,” the dogs’ foster mom said.
The brother and sister were still incredibly attached to one another, and liked to do everything together, from sleeping on the couch to hanging out outside. There was no question about it: these two dogs belonged together. They needed to be adopted as a pair.
It wasn’t long before somebody who was interested in adopting Louie and Bridget reached out to their foster mom. Monica, who lived in California, had been keeping up with the pair’s story for months, and had developed a deep attachment to the both of them in that time.
Despite having never met the dogs, Monica knew in her heart that they were for her. So Louie and Bridget’s foster mom took the pitties on the most important trip of their lives: to their new home in San Diego.
She mentioned the “bittersweet feeling” she felt during the drive, adding:
“When you foster, it’s never easy to let go. You fall in love with every moment you spend with them, and only want them to have a perfect life. They deserve it.”
But the moment they arrived at San Diego, the dogs’ foster mom knew she had made the right decision. Shew knew that Monica would love and care for Louie and Bridget here, and it was where they were meant to be.
The change in Louie and Bridget was phenomenal. From two timid dogs huddled in a corner, looking like they had given up on life, the pair were now having the best time in their forever home. They got to live out their happy ending – all thanks to the patience and hard work of their foster mom and dad.
