Man takes girlfriend to zoo and tells her to read sign otter’s holding up
What a sweet way to propose!

One day, journalist Kelly Sommariva’s bosses asked if she would cover a ‘feel-good’ news story at the Denver Aquarium. She was told to go and “cover the otters.” She agreed to do the story and headed on down to the aquarium.

When she got there, though, she learned the ‘story’ was a front for another big event.

The otters had a very special message for her.

Sommariva began watching the otters and was positioning her camera so she could get a good shot of them. The otters begin swimming around in front of her camera.

Then, one of the otters swims down to the bottom of the tank and pulls up an overturned sign. She takes a minute to read the sign then realizes what it says.

Kelly,

Look at us, now look at your man

Back to us now, back to your man

Now say “yes” to marrying your man!

Love,

Blue, Slater, and Emmet

She looks up from her camera and says, “Nooo!” in disbelief of what she just read. Her boyfriend, Mike Jensen, walks out and behind her and gets down on one knee holding a ring box in his hand.

She spins around and is so otterly (get it!) shocked that she puts her hand over her mouth. Sommariva walks over to Jensen and he takes her by the hand and pops the question.

Still unable to speak, Sommariva shakes her head yes.

He grabs her and hugs her tight for a few seconds. Then Sommariva realizes that he’s forgotten something… the ring.

“Can you show it to me?” she says. “I might want to redact that statement.”

They both laugh and he pulls out the ring and places it on her finger.

“Is it OK?” Jensen asks.

“It’ll do, yeah,” she tells him.

“She doesn’t like it take it back,” he jokes.

But, she clearly does as she goes back to covering her mouth in shock.

They hug again and Jensen looks back at the otter and says, “Good job, buddy.”

It was a beautifully touching moment for everyone who was at the aquarium that day, including Sommarvia’s co-workers.

“I felt so overwhelmed with happiness when I saw Kelly read that sign,” co-worker Raquel Villanueva said.

Even the otters looked like they were having a good time as they swam around the sign. They seemed to also realize how creative and cute this idea was!
