Orphaned Baby Kangaroo Loves Manmade Pouch
Rachel Shapiro

From the time they’re born, baby kangaroos spend most of their time in their mother’s pouch. The joeys stay in the pouch for anywhere from 120 to 450 days, and after that, they’re usually big enough to survive on their own. Unfortunately, if a joey loses their mother, they also lose access to the pouch that makes them feel comforted and safe. But as this video shows, there are alternative pouches available for kangaroos living in sanctuaries.

In this video, a sweet orphaned baby kangaroo named Terri is looking for a pouch to go into. Luckily, her “mum” Brolga has a pouch made out of fabric for her. Brolga opens up the pouch and lets Terri hop in. Then, he picks her up and cradles her. Terri clearly feels comfortable with Brolga, and she happily curls up in her pouch.

Terri lives at the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs, Australia. The sanctuary is owned and operated by Brolga, whose real name is Chris Barnes. Brolga and the volunteers at his sanctuary rescue orphaned kangaroos like Terri and give them a new home.

At the sanctuary, Brolga rehabilitates the kangaroos and helps them learn the skills they’ll need to survive in the wild. Once the kangaroos are ready, he releases them into the Outback. If he feels that the kangaroo won’t be able to make it in the wild because it’s too tame, he releases it to his 188-acre sanctuary instead.

Brolga offers guided tours of the sanctuary where he educates students and tourists on what his sanctuary does for kangaroos. These tours help people learn how to care for injured kangaroos they find on the road, and they also give visitors a chance to get up-close to one of Australia’s most famous animals.
