Sometimes, the most unlikely animals become friends. Nobody can predict which animals are going to form a strong bond. This is why a new interspecies friendship at the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) took rescue workers by surprise. At this rescue center, a little calf became best friends with a tortoise.

The tortoise, Leonardo, has been with WFFT since 2013, when the zoo he was previously at closed. Leonardo spends his time in a large field, eating and roaming around to his heart’s content.

In February of 2016, WFFT rescued a baby calf whose leg had gotten tangled in a vine. Unfortunately, he lost part of his leg, but the rescue center was able to give him a prosthetic.

They named the calf Simon and put him in Leonardo’s field. Once he recovered, they were planning on moving him to another field that housed two other rescue cows. But that all changed when Simon met Leonardo.

Soon after Simon spotted Leonardo in the field, he began following the tortoise around. Before long, they were sharing meals and cuddling with each other. The animals spend almost all of their time together. The rescue workers at WFFT aren’t sure why the two animals are so taken with each other, but they decided not to separate them when Simon began feeling better.

Now, Simon is growing up into a large bull, but he still happily spends most of his time with his best buddy Leonardo. Leonardo also loves getting to hanging out with his bovine friend.

This sweet interspecies friendship seems to be one that will last. Despite their differences, these two friends are sticking together for the long run!
