Animals have the same feelings as humans. They can be happy or angry; they can even feel sad and mourn the loss of another animal they love. When a horse gave birth to a stillborn foal in the Netherlands, she was devastated. She was clearly depressed, and her owners wanted to find a way to cheer her up.

What they came up with was amazing.

Zindita is a retired show jumping horse. When she went into labor in the summer of 2016, things weren’t going very well. She was struggling, and her owners had to call in a veterinarian to help deliver the baby and ensure that Zindita would survive delivery. The vet could tell that Zindita was in for a rough labor.

The vet could tell that she wasn’t going to be able to deliver the foal on her own, so he jumped in to help.

Sadly, it couldn’t be saved and was delivered stillborn. However, he did manage to save Zindita. The mother horse was grief stricken and showed signs of depression. Not only had she gone through a long and painful labor, she had lost her baby in the process. Her owners were just as devastated.

Then, the vet had a great idea.

He got a call about a horse named Tolanda who had died while giving birth to her foal around the same time. The foal was healthy and well for the moment, but she needed someone to care for her. She needed a mother. That’s when the vet knew just what he needed to do.

He called up Zindita’s owners and explained the situation. He thought that if Zindita could take care of the orphaned foal, it might help her move on past the loss of her own baby and maybe fill the void. The owners thought it was worth a try.

As soon as Zindita was introduced to the foal, she fell in love with the foal and was excited to care for her.

It was like she had been reunited with her own baby. The owners and the vet were thrilled at how fast the pair bonded and at the thought of both of them being happy. Dr. Bowman took a photo of them when they met and posted it on Facebook, saying:

“Two days ago, a group of people came together, working as a team… Saving a mare in labor but losing the foal… Today a group of people, working together, the same mare as two days ago, was introduced to a foal who had lost her mom…. This picture is taken an hour after the introduction…. It speaks for itself.”

Of course, Zindita knows that the foal is not her baby that passed away, but she is able to love her and care for her anyway.

Both she and the foal get the love and companionship they both need and deserve. Sometimes, things like this just fall into place. Both the Zindita and the foal are doing well and seem to be happy together. The foal has been named “Listen Good.”

Their story has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook and other social networks and has brought happiness and hope to a lot of people. Seeing Zindita’s depression go away instantly at the sight of the foal is not only heartwarming, it’s a miracle. It’s also a true testament to the power of motherly instincts and love.
