Pregnancy is a wonderful time for a woman. As her body changes, she slowly creates life within herself. For the sake of her unborn child, a pregnant woman is often required to cut out certain foods and hobbies that could possibly make her baby sick. Still, however, some things, like stress can be felt even through the womb. As a mother myself, I’m quite aware that unborn babies can feel the stress of their pregnant mums— what I didn’t know, however, is that these kinds of things can affect cats too.

Last year, a female panther cat got outside and became pregnant. Her family didn’t have enough money to get her spayed or neutered, and they weren’t able to keep the future feline family in their home. That’s when they contacted the Friend For Life Rescue Network looking for some help.

The rescue, situated in Los Angeles, immediately took the Mama in, awaiting the birth of her kittens. When that fateful day finally arrived in April of 2017, rescue employees were surprised to see the little babies for themselves.

Every one of Mama’s tiny kittens had been born with a gorgeous silver coat. The kittens were eye-catching, to say the least. They had been born with a case of “fever coat”.

Fever coat, the beautiful silver fur exhibited by the kittens, is a condition that happens when a pregnant cat experiences fever or extreme stress during her pregnancy.

“Fever coat appears in kittens because the pigments have not been properly deposited in the fur,” sources explain. “This causes parts of the fur to appear silver-grey, cream or reddish as a result.”

Each one of the 7 male kittens had been born with this amazing colored fur. Interestingly though, in the case of fever fur, these colors are only temporary. As the kittens grow older, they shed their grey fur and their “real” fur starts to come through.

The kittens were all named after comic book villains: Magneto, Venom, Joker, Penguin, Lex Luther, Bane and Riddler. At birth, Bane was the lightest.
