Homeless cats go through a lot. It’s hard to live on the streets, trying to find food shelter and whatever else you may need. Throw in the possibility of a major injury, and your chances of survival are extremely slim. According to Cat World, a broken jaw is one of the most common broken bones in cats. These breaks usually occur as a result of serious trauma, such as a car accident, gunshot wound, a kick or a fall. Kitties with this type of injury can experience painful symptoms, such as the inability to open or close their mouth, broken teeth, bruising and swelling, and a reluctance to eat as a result of the pain.

A cat named Duchess was discovered roaming El Paso, Texas, with a broken jaw in October of 2015. Rescuers from the Adobe Animal Hospital and Veterinary Clinic rescued her after the little Siamese had been hit by a car.

Crystal Tate, an employee at the animal hospital, told ABC News, “The impact from the car broke her jaw, and seeing the condition she was in, most other places would have chosen to euthanize her.”

Luckily, Adobe Animal Hospital was not like most other places, and instead, Duchess got the treatment and medical care that she so desperately needed. Duchess underwent surgery to repair her jaw, and although doctors described the chances as “slim”, Duchess was a true fighter, and the little miracle kitty somehow managed to survive.

“The first day I met Duchess, her mouth was just beginning to heal and the feeding tube had just been removed,” Tate said. “She was very thin.”

Although Duchess had undergone a successful surgery, the poor cat was still sad and alone. Despite her loneliness, however, Tate says the Miracle Kitty let our loud purrs whenever she was around, and as can be expected, the woman immediately fell in love.

“Every day, I would spend time with her, petting her, talking to her and when the doctors asked me if I could give her a home a few weeks later, I knew immediately we were meant to be in each other’s lives. “

“It was a transition for us both, I had never cared for a special needs kitty and she had never experienced life as a special needs kitty but we learned together.”

Tate ultimately adopted Duchess, and as the brave cat continued to heal, her true personality started to come out.

Gone is the sad, lethargic kitty Tate had originally met at the animal hospital. Nowadays, the 4-year-old Siamese spends her days playing and keeping up with her animals siblings— Joshua, a Siberian husky; Peaches, a bichon; and Oliver, her kitty brother.

Tate says, “Duchess’ jaw is still crooked and it will be for the rest of her life, but it hasn’t crushed her spirit.”

“We are still learning her quirks and helping her live her new life, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
