When Beau saw his wife lying on the floor, basically death’s door, he wasn’t about to let her just die.
He was going to at least try to revive her.
They’ve been roommates for years. Well, sort of. He and Beatrice were stablemates. And the horses’ owners were sure they were going to lose Beatrice.
They had spent six hours trying to revive her, but it only took Beau about 10 minutes. Because of Beau’s intervention, Beatrice made a miraculous full recovery.
Beatrice was found collapsed in her stable in Langridge, UK.
Telegraph reports that she suffered from equine colic and severe abdominal pain. She was in danger of fatal organ failure while laying on the floor because of her extreme weight.
So, Donald MacIntyre, his wife Jane Lipington and four farm workers tried to get her to stand up for six hours.
They even put a strap and tried to pull her with a tractor.
But they were unsuccessful in their numerous attempts. Her heart rate and blood pressure were rising to dangerous levels and they had to make a tough choice.
They decided to put her down and were about 20 minutes from doing so. That’s when Beau stepped in.
He had to witness his partner endure terrible pain throughout the whole ordeal.
“He spent the whole day in the stall next door, watching Beatrice. He was just quietly watching, he didn’t eat anything. Just watched,” MacIntrye told Daily Mail.
Beau was eventually allowed into Beatrice’s stall to say his final goodbyes.
‘The vet said it was not looking good. People were standing around crying and we were thinking of bringing it forward (putting her down). Then we let Beau in to see her and it took him ten minutes to get her on her feet,” MacIntyre said.
Beau started running toward Beatrice and nuzzled her head from over the stable door.
He then started to bite her neck.
He was also grabbing her halter and started to shake it. It didn’t take long for Beatrice to stand up. MacIntyre and Lipington said they were in complete shock.
“It is absolutely astonishing. We were prepared to lose her and had arranged for her to be put down but Beau knew what to do,” Lipington said.
His ability to revive her was almost like magic.
“In six hours we couldn’t get Beatrice up and we decided to let the stallion Beau have a try. He came in and started biting at her neck and he got her up in just 10 minutes,” MacIntyre explains.
“We all watched with amazement. He lifted her so that her chest and legs came up off the ground, with a little encouragement from us she got shakily to her feet and we quickly walked her out into the yard trying to stop her falling down,” Lipington said. “As we were walking her we phoned to cancel her being put down. It was that close. Our vet was astounded. We are used to seeing extraordinary interactions between the horses but we have never witnessed a horse saving another’s life.”
The horse owners believe its Beau and Beatrice’s close relationship that allowed Beatrice to pull through.
“They have a pretty long-term relationship with each other. They’ve been together 10 years. They’re just always together and they don’t really mix with the other horses,” MacIntyre said. “They bicker a lot. Beau is a big, muscular and strong stallion but he gets pushed around by Beatrice. She always gets the food first. She’s the best mare we have. They’ve had four foals together.”
