Pakita was used to taking little adventures throughout the day. But this time when she escaped from her yard, she couldn’t find her way back.
Thankfully, she wasn’t left on the streets all alone.
The folks at Argentina’s Arca Animal Rescue found her and picked Pakita up. Pakita was brought to a shelter, given a good meal and taken care of.
They waited around for a while, but Pakita’s owner never came to retrieve her. Pakita spent the next two long years in the shelter without being adopted.
Many families overlook the older dogs for the younger puppies. During that time Pakita grew depressed and withdrawn from people.
Getting her to take a simple photo became a task because she would always cower and turn away.
Pakita’s photo was finally posted online for potential adopters to see.
“Immediately, we get a message from a woman saying that the dog was her son’s and that he had been looking for her!” volunteer Silvia Ferreyra told The Dodo.
The woman told Ferreyra that her son, Ariel Naveira, almost lost hope over ever seeing his puppy again. They decided to come down to the shelter to see if it was really Pakita.
The dog at first hid behind his rescuer and wasn’t interested in meeting Naveira. But then Naveira dropped to his knee and called the dog over. The dog backed off, then started to sniff around toward Naveira.
The dog began to whimper loudly before walking over to his long lost friend.
You can see the exact moment Pakita recognizes his dad as she starts jumping and covering Naveira in kisses.
“From that moment there was no doubt,” Ferreyra said.
She was still whimpering when she dropped to the floor for belly rubs. When she got her fill she jumped up and down and came in for more kisses and hugs.
She started a barking a little probably knowing that he would be going home with his dad again.
“It was beautiful,” Naveira told The Dodo. “I was sad to lose her, but to get her back was spectacular. There are no words to describe it.”
Naveria says he and Pakita couldn’t be happier now that they are together again.
And the folks at the Arca Animal Rescue are beyond glad to see that Pakita is where she truly belongs. Watch their tearjerking reunion in the video below.
