Some stories make you recoil when you first hear them. The situation has to be pretty gruesome to cause us to look away. The story of little Peonia is one of those – thankfully, some incredible people didn’t have the heart to look away like most did.
On the streets of Palermo, Italy, a small box sat on the side of the road, passed by almost everyone.
While most of us would pass a box on the side of the road without a second thought, this one wasn’t empty. A little dog was inside, fighting for its life. The little dog, later named Peonia, was in life-threatening condition while people walked past, unaware.
Peonia had severe wounds all across her body.
The little dog had life-threatening wounds all across her body, and, unfortunately, they had become infected. When you are hurt like that without immediate medical attention, infection is bound to happen. The little dog was in a fight for its life.
Someone finally saw the dog in the box and notified a shelter.
When the workers heard how bad the situation was, they acted immediately. Rushing to the scene, they knew that if they didn’t get the dog treatment soon, she wasn’t going to make it. When they found her and gave her an examination, it became clear just how bad it was.
There wasn’t a part of Peonia’s body that wasn’t neglected.
Her nails were three inches long, and all her fur was completely matted. She also had a diaper placed on her that was stuck on her lower half. It was filled with feces and had kept it pressed to her skin and fur for who knows how long. As a result, maggots were squirming in the diaper and skin of the poor dog.
The scene was gruesome.
The first step was to remove the live maggots and fleas living in her own fur. Once she was free of that, she could better assess her condition.

After using some iodine and cutting through all the tangled, matted hair, Peonia was freed from the fur. The next step was to get her eyes looked at.
Her eyes looked in very poor condition – but there was good news to be had!
After an exhausting day of basic treatment, Peonia went and ate some food for her bowl! The moment was exhilarating for the vets since it meant that she was still fighting for life. The little thread of life that was still there was growing stronger each second!
After further examination, all the problems were revealed.
The little dog has a long way to go, but it’s looking up for her. Despite the pain and neglect, she is getting surgery and treatment to help her have a second chance at life where nobody expected her to live. She continues to eat and is getting stronger each day! In the future (a long time in the future), she may just find a home that loves her!
