Imagine being out with your best friend when something bad happens, they fall down an icy hill and can’t get back up.
What would you do in that situation? Find someone to help, right?
But what if you can’t tell them what the problem is?
Well, that was just the case for Scottish terrier Jacques when his best friend Annabelle, also a terrier, fell down a ravine.
The pair had gotten out one night after their elderly owner had needed medical help and the door was opened to bring in a stretcher.
In all the commotion, the two had escaped and were exploring a forested area behind their house.
It was dark and icy as the pair explored, but then the unthinkable happened.
Annabelle got too close to the edge of a steep hill and slid all the way down.
She tried to get back up but was unable to due to the steepness of the hill and the ice covering the ground.
Jacques had no way of helping his friend himself so he went off to find some assistance.
All the while, police had been on the hunt for the two dogs – they needed to get them somewhere safe as their owner recovered.
Eventually, they crossed paths with Jacques.
The little pup ran up to Officer Christopher Bisceglia and barked at him a few times.
The dog would continuously bark at the officer, run a few feet, then check to make sure the man was following him.
He did this all the way back to where Annabelle was trapped.
Officer Bisceglia immediately knew the dog wanted him to follow, so he trotted behind the terrier as he led the way.
Eventually, Bisceglia could hear some faint barking coming from the bottom of the hill and that is when he realized what had happened.
He managed to make his way down the hill to where Annabelle was stuck before trudging back up with the little dog in his arms.
The pair were checked over and taken to Animal Control to be taken care of until their owner can reclaim them.
Jennifer Arsenault is the Animal Control technician currently taking care of the two bonded pups.
When asked about her reaction to Jacques’s heroics, she said she wasn’t surprised at all.
“Especially dogs who have been together a long time,” she told CBS Boston, motioning to the pair at her feet, “they become very bonded with each other.”
“And they’re very intelligent.” she continues, “People don’t give dogs half the credit they deserve.”
Scottish terriers might be even more so like that than other dogs, as they have an extremely high level of protectiveness in their natures.
“I was impressed.” Officer Bisceglia said of Jacques’ determination.
Luckily for Annabelle, her best friend is also her savior and the two have never been closer, waiting patiently for their owner to recover.
Jacques really is a hero, he has even been compared to one of the most famous hero dogs in the world, Lassie, and he certainly lives up to that comparison.
