A mother’s love for her kids is not a uniquely human phenomenon. All across the animal kingdom, we can see examples of mothers going out of their way to care for and protect their little ones. An example we all know is that of the momma bear. You never want to get in between a momma bear and her cubs!
One cat shows just how much a mother cares.
Toodles is a stray cat who lived in a mobile home community when a dog attacked her. After the attack, Toodles was in serious need of care and required immediate medical treatment. For many stray cats, they never have a chance to receive this treatment, but thankfully Mindy was there to help.
Mindy Brocato found Toodles in rough condition.
Mindy Brocato lived in the mobile home community and was the person who found Toodles after the incident. Mindy was an employee at the Anne Arundel Country Animal Care and Control Center, making her the perfect guardian angel to find her!
When she brought Toodles to the center, they treated her wounds… and found something interesting.
As the team worked on the hurt cat, they discovered something truly interesting. Toodles was lactating! She had already given birth, making her a momma! After getting Toodles all fixed up, they immediately went to go find her missing kittens.
As a stray cat, Toodles didn’t have anyone who was watching her kittens for her.
Mindy immediately sent messages to people in the community and started a search for the missing kittens. Kittens are resilient but they needed their momma as soon as possible.
“Mindy alerted her neighbors to be on the lookout for kittens. Five were found under a mobile home and Mindy rushed them to the shelter.”
After finding the kittens under a home, they rushed them to the shelter to be reunited with their mom!
Placing the first kitten on the bed, Toodles sniffed the little one and let out a loud meow of joy! Toodles was ecstatic to have her kittens back. The kittens were about two weeks old and were ready for some milk.
Getting on the bed with their mom, they all clamored for a position.
After some time without food, they were probably really hungry. The little kittens latched on and started squealing as they ate for the first time in a while. Once the kittens were fed, they were transported, along with Toodles, to a foster home.
Even though the cat was safe, she still seemed anxious.
Even after the medical treatment and shelter, Toodles was still acting strangely. After a few days, everyone discovered what the issue was. Toodles was missing another kitten.
Five kittens had been brought but Toodles had given birth to six.
While someone was outside in the mobile community, they heard some whining and whimpering coming from the insulation of the same place they found the five kittens. Getting down and looking, they found a sixth kitten stuck in the insulation of the home!
With her entire family with her, Toodles could finally relax.
The final kitten dove in for a meal and was super hungry. After he settled, everything was as it should be. Because of the generosity of Mindy and others, Toodles was one happy cat.
All of the kittens, as well as Toodles, were adopted soon after.
Toodles is a wonderful example of one mom who wouldn’t rest until she had all of her kids. Animals really do care!
