Bandit the bull dreamed of freedom.

He had spent his whole time trapped in a tiny pen in a windowless room with very little to eat and no space to roam. He and the other bulls in the pen were crowded together, with barely any space to breath. The poor bull wanted to feel the sun on his face, and he wanted to run to his heart’s content.

Thankfully, a German animal sanctuary named Gut Aiderbichl heard about the bulls’ plight. The sanctuary decided to buy Bandit and his fellow bulls. Then, they would bring the bulls to their large sanctuary, where they could finally have the freedom they deserved.

A rescuer named Christian headed to the farm, and he began releasing the bulls. He started with Bandit.

Christian unchained Bandit and let him out of his pen. Bandit took a few tentative steps, and then, to the rescuer’s amazement, he started dancing! The bull couldn’t contain his joy about finally being free.

Christian and the other rescuers loaded Bandit into their truck. Then, according to their website, they freed the other bulls and also brought them to their sanctuary. Every bull living at this farm got to experience freedom that day!

When the rescuers and the bulls got to Gut Aiderbichl, the rescuers let Bandit out of the truck. He danced for joy again—he was so happy to breath fresh air.

After Bandit finished dancing, he started getting to know Aiderbichl’s many other cows. The sanctuary currently looks after more than 500 cows and bulls. All of these animals have light in their eyes—they’re all smart creatures who understand that they’re so lucky to be free.

“Aiderbichl bovines repeatedly tell us that what humans see in them is simply too little,” Aiderbichl wrote on their website. “They’re not stupid, and nor do they react indifferently or calmly to the suffering that we humans cause them. They’re forced to do without so much in their lives.”

Aiderbichl shared a video of Bandit’s rescue on their YouTube page, and it went massively viral, receiving more than 29 million views. Everyone was amazed when they saw how Bandit reacted to being free for the first time in his life.

During his time at Aiderbichl, Bandit has made friends with some of the sanctuary’s other headline-grabbing residents.

He’s become particularly close with a cow named Michaela, who ran away from the slaughterhouse and hid in the woods for weeks. The two love grazing in the grass together.

Bandit is also close with Wilma, another cow who escaped the slaughterhouse and survived being put in quarantine. She now happily spends her time roaming in the fields and hanging out with the other animals in the sanctuary.
