In many areas, humans being on lockdown has encouraged animals to come out from more rural areas and rule the streets, accounting for the fact that there’s a lack of cars and people around. Different neighborhoods have spotted wild animals ranging from bobcats to deer, foxes, monkeys, and even sea lions.
But what do you do when a herd of around 200 goats suddenly thunders down your road? Well for residents in a town in East San Jose, that’s exactly what happened.
It was a Tuesday evening, and all was quiet and still in the neighborhood. But not for long. Suddenly, the air is punctuated by a shout, and a second later, a whole tribe of goats comes thundering down the empty road.
Terry Roelands, who filmed the hilarious video, explained to NBC Bay Area that the hill behind his home caught on fire about 15 years ago. Since then, farmers use goats a few times a year to clear the brush.
But these goats could sense freedom, and they managed to form a simple escape plan.
Apparently, that Tuesday evening, one of the goats was eating some flowers from the other side of the fence. Roelands explained that somehow the greedy goat had managed to tap one of the electric fences, causing it and others to break the boards on the fence.
What that happened, the goats saw their chance and made a bid for freedom. Of course, no one was left behind, and the tribe took up the whole road as they stampeded excitedly through the neighborhood.
Roelands’ son Zach tweeted:
“When I got back from the store all the goats had broken through the fence and were wreaking havoc on our street.”
The goats didn’t manage to get very far before a rancher came to herd them up, but they caused some scenes of carnage as they stampeded down the street, trampling through people’s gardens and up driveways. A couple of particularly greedy goats even stop off to much on some tasty-looking flowers — ones that have clearly been planted and cared for by the owners of the houses.
Hilariously, the greedy goats are herded away by Roelands, still with bits of grass and flowers hanging out of their mouths. These goats have no shame!
Apparently, the rancher was able to herd the goats back onto the ranchlands in around five minutes — but we’re sure that they managed to have lots of fun before that happened. Zach seemed in shock about what had happened, and he tweeted:
“This is the craziest thing to happen all quarantine.”
At the end of the video, we can see a man on a quad bike who is attempting to round the goats up. He even has to drive up someone’s driveway to encourage some goats to get back onto the road.
The video was shared onto Twitter by Zach, and it instantly went viral, receiving over 37k likes and 9k retweets.
Someone commented on the video and asked Zach:
‘All I really want to know is if they ate your grass and saved you the work of mowing the lawn for the week…’
To which he replied:
“Nope they ate all the plants and pooped all over the grass. You know, more fertilizer so Iβll have to mow it twice as often.”
Oh dear — no chance of a silver lining then!
