Snow days are always a blast! During a snow day, you can relax at home and simply watch the snow fall outside. And it turns out it’s not just humans who enjoy snow days. Animals also enjoy getting to play out in the snow.
In January 2017, Portland, Oregon was hit by a rare snowstorm.
This snowstorm was the biggest in more than 20 years, and it dumped a foot of snow on the city. The day after the blizzard, many businesses in Portland were closed. The city’s zoo also closed for the day.
While the zoo was closed to visitors, the animals at Oregon Zoo had a blast playing in the snow!
The zoo’s camera captured the magical moment the animals started playing in the snow. Some animals, like polar bear Nora, felt right in their element. Nora is just a little over a year old, and she was hand-raised by a zookeeper at Oregon Zoo.
When Nora got outside, she immediately started rolling around in the big, fluffy piles of snow.
Other animals experienced snow for the first time that day.
An adorable otter absolutely loved playing in the snow. He hopped out of the water and tried laying down in a pile of snow.
After the otter was finished playing, he enjoyed a tasty meal courtsey of a dedicated zookeeper who made her way to the zoo through the snow.
The zoo’s seals also enjoyed playing in the snow. They rolled around in the fluffy white stuff and had a great time!
The zookeepers were most surprised by their elephant, Samundra. Samudra had never experienced snow before, but she absolutely loved it!
The elephant ran through the snow and dove into the water. As she played in the snow, she let out a noise of pure joy.
Since most of the roads in Portland were impassable, a photographer skied down to the zoo to take pictures of the animals playing. The photos they captured are amazing—they show much the animals enjoyed their snow day.
The Oregon Zoo also shared a video of the animals playing to their YouTube page. It quickly went viral, receiving more than three million views. Everyone loved watching the animals enjoy themselves!
