When we are all kids, odds are our mother sang over us in the crib. It seems that there is something beautiful and wonderfully human about singing to those we care most about. When we grow up, those fond memories often remain with us! They are a wonderful reminder of the love that we received when we were our smallest and most vulnerable.
For one woman, lullabies are for more than her human kids.
Lek has been working at the Elephant Nature Park for a very long time. Her primary job is to care for the many elephants in need that reside in the park. Located in Chiang Mai province, Northern Thailand, the park has been operating since the 1990s to protect and rescue our gray friends.
Our duty of care is to all those under the protection of our umbrella. This includes our staff and guests. We host Elephants, cats, dogs, buffaloes and many other rescued species. We owe them all a duty of care and will do our best to provide the best environment possible. We deeply value the contribution made by all which helps us achieve our goals of providing a sanctuary for those who cannot speak for themselves – ENP
Lek has been working at the Elephant Nature Park with the elephants for quite some time.
With all that time spent with the elephants, Lek has become a sort of “elephant whisperer.” In short, Lek has an unparalleled ability to connect and care for her elephants as few humans can. She has a unique trick up her sleeve that astonishes people every time they see it.
Lek sings lullabies to the elephants!
In this sweet video, Lek demonstrates her ability to sing these massive beasts to sleep! In true “elephant whisperer” fashion, she has a special process that she goes through with the animals to relax and calms them down.
The first part of the ritual involves her slapping a rag across their bodies.
When the video starts, we immediately see the connection between Lek and her elephant friends. Her lumbering friend pulls her in for a hug with her trunk. Ones Faamai (the elephant) has given Lek a final hug, its time for bed. Lek pulls out her trusty pink towel and starts slapping it across Faamai’s body.
Since the elephant’s skin is so thick, it probably feels to Faamai like a head or back scratch feels to us!
Is there anything more soothing on this planet than having someone scratch your head or back as you fall asleep? Well, Lek does that for her elephants! Even as she waves the towel, Lek starts singing over the elephant in a soothing and melodic voice.
Gently singing and slapping, the massive animal lays down and visibly gets sleepy!
Getting close, Lek stares into Faamai’s eyes as she slowly drifts off to sleep. As her eyes droop, her family comes around her. For anyone not familiar with elephants, this truly is a one of a kind family. Watching this makes the thought of mistreating these animals unbearable.
With her friends and family around her, Faamai drifts off to dream whatever elephants dream about.
Whether it’s about peanuts or her friend Lek, Faamai is off and away dreaming. We have seen dog whisperer Cesar Milan, but Lek may have just one-upped him!
