Crystal and her cat Baba Ganoush have been through a lot together.
Crystal found Baba G. when she and her husband were living in Jacksonville, Florida. The cat was abandoned by his former owners and desperately needed help. Crystal took him in and provided him with the love and support he needed. Baba G. loved Crystal, and he even got along with her dog!
Over the next few years, Crystal’s husband, who’s in the military, was deployed multiple times. Baba G. comforted Crystal and provided support during this time.
“He’s a charming sweetheart,” Crystal told Petco Foundation. “He loves to sleep on my chest, tucking his head around my neck and into my hair. We often nap together on the weekends.”
One day, Crystal and her husband learned they were moving to Oak Harbor, Washington. The couple and their beloved pets packed the car and moved to their new home.
Soon after they arrived in Washington, Crystal got some devastating news: Baba G. had soft tissue sarcoma. Crystal immediately knew she would do whatever it took to get her cat healthy again. Her local veterinarian recommended Flint Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University.
The cancer center was 1,300 miles from Crystal’s home in Washington, but she decided it was worth the drive. She wanted to give her sweet the cat the best chance at surviving.
Crystal and Baba G. drove from Washington to Colorado together. When they arrived, Baba G. immediately began three weeks of radiation treatment.
Crystal also learned she qualified for the Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo Foundation Cancer Treatment Fund, which helped relieve some of her anxiety.
“[The fund] gave us the peace of mind to focus on Baba’s treatment and not the anxiety around financing his care. It was such a relief to have a plan in place to rid Baba of his cancer,” Crystal said.
After three weeks of radiation treatment, Crystal and Baba G. went back home. Baba G. is finishing his treatment in Washington, and he’s already doing much better!
Baba G. has more energy, and he still has the same playful personality. Crystal is so glad that her sweet cat is doing well.
“Baba and our dog have been my companions through my husband’s many deployments,” Crystal said. “It’s comforting to come home to their little furry faces.”
