No one stops for ‘werewolf’ on side of the road until one kind woman sees him
“It’s hard to think that all those cars passed him by and never stopped”

It’s difficult to get our heads around why a person would abandon their pet, but what’s even more confusing to us is how anyone could drive past and ignore a helpless animal living out on the streets. Often, people may worry about the animal being dangerous, or in the case of this next story, are scared of the animal if they have illnesses or injuries that make them look out of the ordinary.

So when a dog who was so badly unkept that he looked like a werewolf was spotted out on the streets, people were too afraid to approach the animal. Little did they know that he was sick, starving, and desperate to be saved.

Thankfully, some weeks after first being spotted on the streets, the dog was eventually rescued and taken to veterinary care. He is now healing well and is waiting to be put up for adoption, but none of this would have been possible if people hadn’t have been brave enough to rescue him.

The poor homeless dog had been a sorry sight. He was skinny, with bald patches where his fur was meant to be and a bent, shriveled tail. He was barely able to walk and had been spotted limping around Madera Ranchos, California, orchard for quite some time. He became known as the ‘werewolf’, and people were afraid to approach him. It seemed that he was never going to get the help that he so badly deserved.

But thankfully, at the beginning of March, his luck was about to change. After spotting him out one day, a woman made a Facebook post asking for help, and dog rescuer Megan Bowe went straight to the scene.

“I was about ready to cry when I saw how bad off he was,” Bowe, founder of Bowe’s Adoptable Rescue Pups, told The Dodo. “He was really on his last leg. He was depressed and could barely even stand up.”

Megan took the sick German Shepherd straight to the emergency vet’s, and the poor thing was so unwell that we willingly got into her car. He was desperate to be saved.

“My vet thinks he got hit by a car, and that would explain how his tail was so messed up, too,” Bowe said. “That injury happened months ago, because by the time I got him it had already started to heal incorrectly. And with such a damaged pelvis, he wasn’t able to get around very far on his own to look for food so he was extremely skinny and dehydrated.”

But despite all of his injuries, the dog, who Megan named King, still had a kind and loving character. His life on the streets hadn’t seemed to have affected his personality at all.

“He’s a super loving dog,” Bowe said. “If I sit down, he has his face right next to mine and leans in as if he’s giving me a hug. He has been so calm and relaxed through everything.”

Megan cared for King as he was treated with medication and surgery to help fix his broken bones. She was sure to give him lots of food and water to build up his weight, as well as a comfortable bed and lots of gentle walks. The ‘werewolf’ began to flourish before her eyes, and King began to look more and more like the German shepherd that he was.

“He is happier than ever now,” Bowe said. “It’s hard to think that all those cars passed him by and never stopped. No one wanted to bring him home or help him because he looked so bad … But all it took was one person.”

We’re so thankful to Megan for taking the time to rescue King, and we can’t wait for him to find his very own forever home. With his loving personality, we’re sure that he will be adopted very soon.
