When Nova Scotia resident Wendy Wolodka was walking along the beachfront to get to work one day, she came across the unexpected waiting for her at the shoreline.

It only takes five minutes for Wendy to get to her job at The Lobster Pound, but when she came across a distressed seal pup, she knew that she would have to stop and help.

The poor baby was covered in blood and was visibly upset. Wendy heard the cries from afar, and at first, she thought she was listening to the cry of a seagull.

“I went out in the water with him,” Wendy told The Weather Network. “I saw all this blood and thought he was hurt.”

Wendy became frantic as she tried to think of ways to help the little pup. To her, it seemed as if he was hurt in some way, and it broke her heart to see such a small animal alone by itself.

She had never been so close to a seal pup before, and she took out her phone to record the special moment.

“I was crying like a baby myself,” she recalled. “I was so heartbroken, and knew that I had to do something to save the baby.”

Wendy didn’t know it at the time, but it turned out that the grey seal pup had just been born. She contacted a marine rescue team who helped to reassure her that the baby was going to be okay, and advised her not to make direct contact with the pup.

As it turns out, seal pups are usually born on the beach before their mother leaves them to head out and get some food. Labor is an exhausting process and the mom knows that she needs to get her energy up before she can care for her child.

Once she’s had her fill, she then returns to her baby with enough strength to properly care for them.

Wendy could now relax in the knowledge that the pup’s mom would be returning back to heat at some point. But she couldn’t help marveling over the experience that she’d had.

“He was a brand new baby, I wouldn’t doubt that he’d been born that morning,” she said. “Honestly, he was so new.”

Since the initial incident, Wendy has since seen the baby seal swimming in and out with the tides looking healthy- a clear indication that mom had indeed come back for her baby.

Wendy’s story was shared on YouTube by The Weather Network, and it wasn’t long before people from all over the world began to praise her actions.

“Beautiful baby, the woman did the right thing by contacting the maritime authorities & not touching it, which is hard for people to do when an animal is young & cute. Big thumbs up to her for doing the right thing & helping,” one person said.

Another added:

“Good for her, she did the right thing. She phoned for advice and didn’t touch the baby seal which would possibly alienated it from its mother. The fact that she got emotional when she saw an animal in distress is completely normal. I applaud her actions.”

What an amazing experience Wendy must have had! We bet that made a great story to tell once she finally got to work. Watch the video for yourself below.
