The 850 lucky senior pups who’ve managed to swindle their way into free room and board at Whispering Willows Senior Doc Sanctuary over the years are certainly living “the rich, slow life.”

Not only do they get their own bedroom suites and 5 acres of land to run around in, but they also have tons of other playmates to get friendly with.

And yet, not a single one of them is considered “adoptable.”

Maybe that’s because, unlike other pet rescue centers, Whispering Willows is their official forever home.

Once they’re welcomed into the fray they can stay until it’s time to cross the rainbow bridge.

The main house is the social networking hub where all the exciting action happens. Think of it like a man-cave, or a playroom. It’s a safe place to sniff out all the good (or bad) smells without getting nose-tapped.

Every day is a tea party here, where the senior pups can gobble up biscuits and bark about Mr. Poodle’s silly haircut, before crapping out on the floor for an afternoon nap.

For the sweet introverts that just want some me time to themselves, the second house provides a more serene, spa-like setting.

It’s decked out in soothing blue colors, which the wallflowers of the bunch likely find very dreamy.

It’s never lonely at the sanctuary. Some pups even get roommates to snuggle with!

When they’re not being pushed off by the bigger breeds, the smaller dogs who live in the main house like to cuddle up with the sanctuary’s owner, Valerie Reid. But when things got a little too cozy for comfort, she got another bed for them to sleep in.

Valerie says that WWSDS is a “lifetime sanctuary providing shelter, medical care, and most of all love, until the senior dog passes.”

This life-changing setup is actually saving lives! She never puts her rescues in a kennel or a cage, and they also don’t get passed around from one foster family to the next.

The dogs are so much happier in her care, which means they live much longer than they would have elsewhere.

As you can probably imagine, running a sanctuary keeps everyone busy. Breakfast is prepped starting at 6 am, and it takes an hour just to get all the bowls and plates in front of all the furry faces.

After they’ve had their fill, it’s recess time and the poochies can do whatever they feel like.

But barking at the UPS truck as it drives by is one of their favorite pastimes.

Valerie’s favorite part of the day is right after all the dogs settle down after they’ve had their supper and taken their medicine.

“Imagine Kindergarten naptime. That is really the sweetest time of the day, to see them being so peaceful and at rest and not anxious.”
