Most people absolutely cringe at the site of an opossum. Many people view them as a large rat because let’s be honest, they really do look alike. Many times people have had bad and unexpected run-ins with them.
The opossum’s name is Hank and he found a cozy place to sleep.
The nephew of a woman posted a photo online of a strange occurrence happening in his aunt’s garage. An opossum was curled up for a nap inside a box full of cozy blankets. The opossum’s name is Hank. And he often comes by the woman’s garage for a safe and warm place to sleep.
The post reads, “This is Hank. Hank lives in my aunt’s garage He’s very old and has a hard time walking so she set up a warm place for him to rest and feeds him lots of treats.”
Let’s face it, opossums are a strange mix of mostly ugly and a slight bit cute – if you ignore their disgusting tail. So when this nephew posted that his aunt lets one stay in her garage, people were going crazy.
The internet is loving Hank and his laid back demeanor.
Folks on Reddit couldn’t get enough of Hank and seeing him curled up all cozy in the box full of blankets. They commented on his cuteness and how happy he looked to be there.
“Hank showed up a couple of years ago and hung around a bit for cat food. He’s not tame but also never hissed or seemed afraid. As he’s gotten older, he stayed around longer until he just decided he was going to take up residency in the garage,” wrote the original poster, damndirtycracker.
He also noted that his aunt leaves the side door open for Hank to come and go as he pleases. But as Hank has gotten older, he spends more and more time in the garage. Amazingly, opossums generally only live to be around two to three years old, which many users found quite saddening.
When someone brought up this fact, damndirtycracker said, “I am not about to tell her that. She’s having the best time with her new friend and I’m not going to rain on that parade.”
Opossums are often misunderstood.
Despite their appearance, opossums are actually creatures that do more good than harm. According to the Famer’s Almanac, when baby opossums are born, they are only the size of a honeybee. They will stay with their mother in her pouch, much like a kangaroo, until they are two to three months old. At that time, they get brave and will start riding around on their mothers back.
The opossum is naturally a docile creature, and immune to many snake venom and rabies due to their low body temperature. Opossums are also good to have around because they eat ticks, which spread Lyme disease. It is disgusting, but opossums can eat as many as 5,000 ticks at one time. That is a lot of disease prevention!
