One Thursday morning, Malissa Sargent Lewis was running late for work. To save some time, she decided to take a shortcut to get to the elementary school where she worked. She turned onto a back road, knowing that would get her to the school a little faster than her usual route.
Little did she know, that spontaneous decision would lead to her saving a life.
As Lewis drove down the quiet country street, she noticed a trash bag moving on the side of the road.
“I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, ‘Did I just see that bag move?’ The closer I got, I realized it was moving,” she told The Dodo. “I could hardly wrap my mind around that. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out.”
Lewis shared a video of the moment that she noticed the bag to her Facebook page.

Lewis cautiously walked up to the bag, unsure if the animal inside was dangerous. She tore open the bag a little bit and looked at what was inside.
To her surprise, a puppy looked up at her.
“As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail,” she told The Dodo. “He knew he was OK. I couldn’t believe it.”
Lewis was shocked that someone would cruelly stuff an innocent puppy into a trash bag. Lewis had to go work, but she couldn’t just just leave the puppy on the side of the road. So she decided to take him with her.
“I just put him in my lap and drove to school,” she told The Dodo. “I couldn’t just leave him in the car, so I brought him in with me. The principal saw me and said, ‘You have a dog!’ I said, ‘It’s a long story.'”
Lewis’s son picked up the puppy and brought him home. After work, Lewis brought the puppy over to the vet, who gave him his vaccines. Despite everything he had been through, the puppy was happy and healthy.
Lewis called the police and told them what happened. Since the puppy didn’t have ID, the police didn’t think someone was going to come forth and claim the puppy. So Lewis decided to adopt the little dog and give him a wonderful new forever home.
Lewis and her family quickly bonded with the puppy, and they gave him a name: Hefty!
“We all love the puppy,” Lewis said to The Dodo. “He’s going to be loved, and have a good home with us. I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time to save him. That’s what it was.”
This lucky puppy is going to have a great life with Lewis and her family!
