Stories of dog rescues are some of the best stories. Removing dogs from unsafe, harmful, and horrible conditions is something that animal lovers never get tired of hearing about – it’s a much deserved second chance. However, sometimes – it’s not humans saving dogs – it’s the other way around.
Way is a dog from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and she’s a street dog who has lived a hard life so far – but she also happens to have a heart of gold.
The sweet, stray dog wasn’t spayed and she had just given birth to a little of puppies – it would prove hard for her to keep them all safe and healthy given the fact that she struggled to survive herself.
Knowing that Way had to feed her puppies, she knew she had to scour the streets for any food scrap that she could get her paws on. Given the fact that it was July in Argentina, their winter, the temperatures were near freezing so she knew she had to hurry.
As Way was walking through an alley, the dog had come across a heartbreaking sight – it was a newborn baby that had been abandoned by its mother.
Without a second thought, Way’s maternal instincts kicked in, and she knew that the baby needed warmth and protection. Running back to her puppies, Way picked each one up, one by one, and brought them back to place around the newborn baby. After propping her entire litter around the cold newborn, Way wrapped her body around them as best as she could.
The following morning, a resident in the area named Alejandria Griffin, her muffled cries coming from outside her apartment. She was curious as to what it was and who it was coming from, so she went outside to investigate.
Alejandria was absolutely stunned to find that the cries were coming from a newborn baby and that Way was keeping him warm, taking the baby in as one of her own.
Alejandria has no idea how long the baby had been there and she rushed to call the police. They rushed the newborn, now called Santino, to the emergency room for immediate medical attention.
“She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires said. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this, he would have died. The dog is a hero to us.”
Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital, confirmed that the newborn was just a few hours old.
Aside from having a few superficial scratches and had been bleeding from the mouth, Santino was in surprisingly good condition for what he had been through. Had it not been for Way’s loving, maternal efforts, who knows what could have happened to this poor baby.
The next morning after Santino arrived at the hospital, police were able to track down the baby’s mother, a 33-year-old Buenos Aires woman who already had 8 other children. She was arrested for abandoning her newborn baby
In 2008, a similar story occurred in Argentina where a newborn had been abandoned by his 14-year-old mother and was kept safe by a dog nicknamed La China.
Way is a true hero and she was taken in by a local shelter where she and her babies will soon find their forever homes. Watch the story of La China in the video below.
