Like millions of other people, your pup is probably more like a family member than an animal. After all, dogs make fantastic pets. They love unconditionally, enjoy cuddling, offer comedy relief, and often, they’re super protective of their humans. So, you can only imagine how you would feel if someone stole your furry friend.
That’s one woman’s story
Jessica Gary owns an adorable Chihuahua named Fidel. Although they frequently visit the park, one day, something horrible happened. A stranger snatched her dog. Jessica felt furious and frightened at the same time.
Stopping at nothing
Jessica was especially concerned since Fidel is 15-years-old and requires takes daily medication. Knowing he was in someone else’s possession was heartbreaking. Determined to get her dog back, she offered a $3,000 reward for anyone who could find him.
Starting to search
Jessica immediately had fliers made. For two days, she posted them anywhere she could. She also had friends helping her search for Fidel. But even with all the efforts, he was nowhere to be found.
An incoming tip
Although Jessica felt completely overwhelmed and distraught, there was no way she was giving up on her search for Fidel. Then one day, she received a tip. The individual told her to check out a neighborhood known as Carroll Gardens.
Somewhat hopeful
It might’ve been a long shot but Jessica and a friend headed to that neighborhood. And lo and behold, there he was. Rather than roaming free, a couple was holding Fidel as they walked down the street, acting as though he belonged to them.
Quick action
After spotting the couple, Jessica knew she had to work fast. With tension rising, she and her friend jumped out of the car and without saying a word, snatched her sweet pup. Then in the blink of an eye, they got back inside the car and locked the doors.
She stole her dog back
Everything happened so quickly that at first, the couple just stared. But then as Jessica began to drive away, they started pounding on her car windows. She didn’t care since she finally had Fidel back safely in her arms.
He’s rightfully hers
Concerned the couple might call the cops, Jessica filed a report with the NYPD. After going over all the details, she got great news. The police told her she had every right to do what she did and for that reason, she wasn’t in any trouble.
An innocent couple?
Jessica realized that either this couple was involved in snatching Fidel or that someone gave them her dog or they bought him. If the latter, that meant they were innocent. That also meant the real criminal was still on the loose.
No resolution
Considering all the serious crimes the NYPD is currently fighting, dognapping is low on their list of priorities. As a result, the person who snatched Fidel will likely never be caught. Hopefully, no one else will have to go through what Jessica did.
As for taking her stolen dog back, Jessica has no regrets whatsoever. Even if the couple walking him were innocent, this wasn’t their pup. This story is a good reminder that anyone who owns a dog needs to be extra careful when visiting parks and to always keep their pets on a leash.
