When most people think about adopting a pet, they want to get the cutest, friendliest one they can find.
One woman felt the opposite. She didn’t just want a new pet; she wanted to help a pet in need. Holly knew that the happy pets are the first to get adopted. but the ones that aren’t as friendly aren’t so lucky.
She called Purrfect Pals, a no-kill shelter in Washington state, and told them she wanted to adopt their least-adoptable pet.
She asked if there were any older cats available or any that had been there for a long time. The shelter thought this might be a good chance to find a home for a cat named Bailey.
Bailey had been adopted from the shelter when she was just a kitten. She was returned six years later, and since then, she had become a little bitter. All the other, younger kittens were being chosen over her, and the shelter wondered if she would ever find a home.
A shelter representative said:
“Her previous owner’s allergies had become so severe she could not keep Bailey… Of course, nobody imagined this fluffy, green-eyed girl with the glossy black coat would still be at the shelter waiting for a home almost five years later.”
Holly decided to visit the shelter and meet Bailey and some other cats that were living there.
She was determined to take one home, but could she handle Bailey’s bad attitude? She went to several shelters that morning and met with several cats. She was planning on keeping the cat she adopted forever, so she wanted to make sure that she chose one that would fit in with her family.
She just couldn’t stop thinking about Bailey and how much she liked her, and she called the shelter back that same afternoon and let them know she wanted to take home the grumpy cat. Holly knew that Bailey would do well at her home because she would be the only cat there.
Holly had plenty of toys for her and even a big window for Bailey to watch the birds from.
The shelter representative added:
“Bailey was way overdue for adoption. We are doing happy dances, turning somersaults, and maybe even shedding some happy tears that our fluffy girl has finally, after five very long years, left the shelter.”
Bailey may have found the perfect home, but she wasn’t the only who benefited from the adoption.
Holly needed her in her life, and she now has a new friend to keep her company. She couldn’t be happier with Bailey. Although she may have been grump in the shelter, the cat’s attitude has changed since she went home with Holly.
Holly said:
“We are so happy to have Bailey in our lives. She follows us everywhere, demanding a decent massage, and slept on my pillow this first night. Her tail is held high, her eyes are bright, and between all the cuddles she lets me pick her up.”
Holly and Bailey were just meant for each other.
Bailey may have spent five years in the shelter, but now she has a forever home with a family that loves her. Most people wouldn’t have been looking for a cat like Bailey. Holly could have picked an adorable kitten or a cat that loved cuddles and was clearly ready for a new home, but she chose to pick the underdog or, rather, “undercat.”
She knows she made the right choice because she and Bailey share a special bond. The next time you think about adopting a pet from a shelter, consider choosing an old one who wants a home just as much as the younger ones.
