Cats are funny animals that don’t always fit the “normal” definition of how they should behave— especially when it comes to the friends they choose to spend their time with! Some felines can’t be bothered with anyone else, while others form strong bonds that are more than unexpected.
Fum is an all-black kitty from Spain that was adopted by Jordi as a kitten. Fum means “smoke” in Catalan and is pronounced as “Foom”.
Jordi happens to be a Falconer. He spends his days training and taming barn owls, and he loves nature and animals. When Fum was just a kitten, he had regular interaction with the owls Jordi trained and kept as pets.
Gebra is one of Jordi’s owls. He was hand-tamed since he was just a little owlet and eventually blossomed into a gorgeous barn owl.
Gebra was a friendly little owl. He showed interest in Fum the kitty and took him under his wing— but that was just the beginning…
One day, Fum accompanied Jordi and Gebra on a walk. They were heading to do a regular owl training session to practice takeoffs and landings. At one point, however, Jordi noticed Fum had disappeared.
Jordi’s heart dropped when he saw the kitty reappear. Gebra the owl was coming right for him! An owl with large talons barreling down towards a kitty doesn’t sound like a happy ending, but this story is just getting started.
To Jordi’s delight and surprise, he realized Gebra and Fum had been playing all along!
As scared as Jordi was, he quickly caught on to their antics and realized they were just having fun together!
“In the beginning, I was not amused at all by the game, because I saw that it could turn for the worst. After a few days, I realized that the game was quite harmless and innocent.” Jordi told Nat Geo Wild (via Honest To Paws).
The pair became the best of friends, and Fum didn’t mind having to jump into a tree to be close to his buddy.
They couldn’t be separated! And, of course, their playtime didn’t stop either.
One of their most famed tricks is a high five… in the air.
And they love to dance!
Naturally, Jordi took videos of the duo’s adventures, and when he finally began posting them online, he couldn’t believe the attention they received from animal lovers everywhere.
“First it had 1,000 visits or something like that, and then I went to sleep. And the next day, there were 300,000 visits and I thought, ‘What happened?’”
Fum and Gebra were the best of friends. However, as nature took its course, Fum grew old and eventually made his crossing over the Rainbow Bridge. Upon Fum’s passing, Jordi took to social media to share a few thoughts and commemorate the beloved cat.
“Fum and Gebra’s message is our most rich legacy,” Jordi wrote.
“They have been able to show us, humans, that love, and friendship are the most valuable treasures we can [have].”
As we all know, unlikely friendships can take many forms, but the end result is always incredible. I’m sharing this story in hopes that Fum and Gebra’s legacy continues to carry on and bring hope and inspiration to people everywhere.
