This is a land that still retains its wild heart at the right moments.
In a captivating video uploaded by Al Perry, we witness a dramatic scene in this wild state.
A mare, having just given birth to a foal named Patriot, finds herself in a vulnerable position.
She’s weak from the birthing process, not in the best shape to defend herself or her newborn.
Yet, the instinct of a mother is strong and fierce.
The message is clear: never underestimate a mother’s protective nature, especially when it comes to her offspring.
Harm to a child or mother will not be tolerated, a rule that applies across the animal kingdom.
The drama unfolds as a group of wild mustangs, akin to rowdy bachelors, attempt to claim the mare and her newborn.
The mare, with her newborn by her side, is not about to let this happen.
The situation is reminiscent of a scene at a local bar where a group of men unwisely decide to harass a lone woman, only to realize she’s not one to be trifled with.
Mustangs, though often thought of as wild horses, are technically feral, descendants of domesticated horses.
These animals, originally brought to America by Spanish explorers, are known for their endurance, speed, and adaptability.
Smaller than European breeds, mustangs are excellent for long-distance riding, a trait often showcased in documentaries.
The term “Mustang” comes from the Spanish words “mestengo” and “mostrenco,” meaning “wild or masterless cattle.”
This aptly describes the wild and untamed nature of these horses, as experienced by the vulnerable mare in our story.
Despite their attempts, the mare knew these bachelors weren’t as tough as they seemed.
In a display of maternal strength and determination, the mare fiercely protects her foal, Patriot.
She positions herself between the foal and the bachelor stallions, ready to fight to her last breath if necessary.
Her protective instincts are even more remarkable considering she had just given birth.
Viewers of the video were moved by the mare’s actions.

“The way she gently keeps checking the foal while putting herself in between baby and stallion is fantastic. So gentle with baby, the boys get the kicks! The baby is such a pretty color too. It’s really obvious when the foal’s dad finally appears, lol.”
Another added:
“Wow! the momma mare had a strong hindquarter to kick off the persistent bachelor stallions. Loved how she danced in circles around her new foal making sure the foal, Patriot, was totally protected.”
The story of this mare and her foal is a testament to the protective nature of mothers, a trait shared across species. Mustangs, known for their wild and free spirit, can still be domesticated.
