Bears in story books and animated shows and movies are often portrayed as adorable, cuddly creatures who don’t do anything except eat, sleep, and roam about with their “friends”.

The artists may have gotten creative with their portrayal of the omnivorous creature for entertainment purposes but they did hit pretty close to home.

Black bears are the most common in North America. Typically, black bears live in forests but they also wander around mountains and swamps. They often keep to themselves and stay dormant in their dens during winter but during other seasons, a black bear sighting isn’t rare.

Bears are also described as opportunistic eaters. While their diet mainly consists of roots, berries, grasses, and insects, they also enjoy scarfing down fish, mammals, and even human food. The last item on the list may seem like a pretty odd choice for bears but this is possible because of campsites, cabins, and rural homes.

Coming in close contact with a bear just to see if it’ll appreciate what’s in your picnic basket isn’t a very wise decision.

And so to avoid danger for both the bear and humans, animal experts remain firm and consistent in warning humans not to feed the bears.

But what happens when a bear decides to crash your picnic and enjoy what’s on the table?

For this family, panic wasn’t an option. No one froze or attempted to contact a park ranger.

In fact, they reacted as though having lunch with a black bear was the most natural thing in the world.

Seated on a picnic table, four family members sat casually and looked on as the bear helped himself to a few spilled treats. The oblivious bear munched on happily, not caring at all how the family excitedly marveled at the interaction.

One of them even attempted to hand treats to the bear and touch its face!

While that was definitely a no-no, it was amazing (and a huge relief, honestly) that the bear didn’t react and chose to keep eating.

There were over a hundred comments on the entire scenario.

From witty, hilarious ones…

“Strange that the bear didn’t open a can of beer.”

“The Ranger isn’t going to like this, Yogi…”

“The bear is not wearing a mask…”

To more serious remarks on the possible dangers presented by the situation:

“It is normal when the bear sees people often and when he is not hungry. But guy who tried to touch him was lucky, because animals have their own etiquette of behavior, when you touch someone you cross the border of what is permissible. Never try to touch or pet a wild animal, even if it looks peaceful.”

While we can all agree that this black bear encounter was truly fascinating, the best takeaway from the scenario is to still use one’s presence of mind when face to face with undomesticated animals.
