Veteran scales down 100 foot ravine to save puppy in need
Rescuers had already determined that the ravine was too deep to scale. That's when a veteran decided to turn the tables.

When one Ohio citizen thought they heard the cries of a puppy down at the bottom of a ravine they reported it to the local animal shelter.

Employees from the Ross County Humane Society rushed out to the site of the trapped puppy.

When they got there, though, they found that the 100-foot ravine was just too deep and difficult to scale.

Then, a hero came along.

On Facebook, they wrote:

“Today we received a call about a puppy who had fallen down a ravine approximately 80-100 feet and landed on a slate ledge near a small waterfall. We sent staff out to see if they could safely retrieve the 8 week old mixed breed pup and it was quickly determined they could not.”

Luckily for them, there was a good samaritan passing through at just that moment.

His name is Joe Lawhorn

He is a local friend of the shelter as well as a cyclist and military veteran.

When he heard the cries of the 8-week old puppy down below, he knew that he had to do something to help.

Lawhorn climbed down the ravine.

He grabbed the scared dog and climbed back up to the road with the unharmed puppy in his arms.

The Ross County Humane Society was overjoyed!

They decided to honor Lawhorn and his efforts by naming the puppy after one of his cycling sponsors, Kenda Tire Road N Gravel.

The pup’s name is now Kenda.

Actually, Lawhorn was sponsored by a few other companies and the humane society decided to name some other puppies from the shelter after his sponsors as well.

The humane society wrote on Facebook:

“The puppies were all named in honor of Joe and his cycling sponsors. Kenda, Rudy, Irwin, Marque, and Fuji will be available for adoption in just a few days. Thank you to the staff and everyone in the community who stepped up to help this puppy.”

These puppies are still a little too young to adopt but they will be ready soon and it’s all thanks to Lawhorn.

Had he not come by at the right time and decided to act, Kenda may never have made it out of that deep ravine.

The Ross County Humane Society gave this information on the puppies if you think you may be interested in adopting one:

“The infamous cliff jumping puppies are going to be available for adoption soon. We are going to start taking applications for Kenda, Irwin, Marque, Fuji, and Rudy. They received their second round of vaccines yesterday and will be ready to head into homes this weekend.
All of the puppies in this litter are males and they are currently 8 weeks old. They are mixed breed puppies who are likely going to be 50-60lbs when full grown.
If you’d like to adopt one of these nationally recognized puppies please visit rosscountyhumanesociety.org to apply.”
