When Sydney-based TV producer Trent Holmes found himself in the middle of a terrifying elephant stampede in the South African bush, he was having a really good, and a really bad, day.
It all started when a ragtag crew of really pissed off elephants charged out of the grasslands and defiantly crossed paths with a bunch of B-list celebrities on safari.
Altogether there were five Brits and five Australians in the tour group. It was probably really exciting at first for them to see all those magically elephants appear right in front of them, one by one.
After all, they paid big bucks (or at least their reality TV producer did) to see wild and zany things like this go down, right?
Unfortunately, every single one of them found themselves in the unenviable position of peeing their pants after one very aggressive bull in particular started giving them the stank eye!
This guy meant business and he wanted them to leave. Like, NOW!
Trent was on a break from filming the Aussie version of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and was enjoying his vacation with the other stars of this show. Until this happened.
That’s when the TV producer suddenly found himself back behind the camera, but now he was filming a very different kind of reality TV show. This one was unfolding, totally raw and unedited, right there on the African plains!
As Trent explained to the Mirror, they actually heard the ruckus the elephants were making long before the magnificent beasts made an appearance:
“Our guide Gert Kruger heard trumpeting while we were out in the bush and said a herd were nearby moving very fast. He took us down a dirt track to see what was going on and suddenly coming from our right trumpeting and smashing through trees and bush was this huge herd of upset elephants.”
This bull elephant was so peeved, he started marking his territory by dropping stinky poop bombs right in front of the shocked onlookers!
But, it turns out that the tourists weren’t the original source of the elephant herd’s angst. You can blame that one on the lions.
On his YouTube channel, Trent explained why the elephants were so agitated:
“We were caught in the middle of an Elephant Stampede, apparently the elephants were trying to scare lions nearby, so they were knocking down trees, trumpeting, little did we know at the time we were caught in the middle of the moving elephants who were angry we got in the way.”
Even though you can see everyone laughing and smiling in the video Trent filmed, it was a nervous laugh. They were all pretty frightened! And rightly so.
This behemoth of a land animal could swipe right with his massive trunk and fling their broken bodies into a nearby bush if he wanted to.
The elephant stood his ground and made it very clear that it was no longer the lions, but the humans, that he was more interested in toying with.
“Then it came back and charged fast again through the trees with its trunk out and one of our group begged Gert to drive away and he said ‘Relax guys, we can’t go now, we have to wait it out'”
The group soon found themselves surrounded on all sides by not one, but the entire herd of elephants. And it quickly became apparent why!
They were just protecting their wee little ones. Boop boop, what a cutie!
“When the full herd had crossed he felt there was a safe time to turn on the engine and we slowly moved away followed by three or four elephants who were just shepherding us off.”
And that’s how this amazing I’m A Trapped Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! jungle story went down.
