A couple from Washington was just waiting at the school for the bell to pick up their children, but they made a surprising discovery. A small weasel showed up, and it did seem to come from the inside of the car.
It turns out a small family of baby weasels was hiding in the car engine, but the mother of the weasels got afraid and tried to escape. She managed to run into a nearby field holding one of her babies in her mouth.
When the couple saw the weasel run away, they decided to pop open the hood of their car to check if more animals were hiding in or around the engine.
They looked around and found four more extremely tiny baby weasels. They each weigh just under ten grams and are about the size of a quarter. The little babies are extremely fragile and the couple decided to get in touch with wildlife experts as soon as possible.
The team at Squirrel Refuge decided to took the four weasels in and they were quickly transferred to A Soft Place to Land in Graham. A Soft Place To Land specializes in rehabilitation of wildlife animals.
Jasmine Fletcher Graze is one of the wildlife rehabilitators and founded A Soft Place to Land. She instantly fell in love with the four weasels. “They are so amazing!”, she said. Jasmine estimated that the weasels were only a couple of weeks old and they needed to hand-fed every couple hours.
Jasmine also says that weasels often don’t get the recognition as pets they deserve. Jasmine says they’re often regarded as pests, but weasels are truly nice and sweet animals.
The weasel family has been residing at A Soft Place to Land for a couple of months and their growth was also documented on their Facebook page. Slowly but surely, they’re growing bigger and are starting to interact and play with other.
“Their eyes just opened a few days ago and they are now starting to eat some on their own,” Jasmine said.
As for the couple that found the weasels, they decided that they would help the weasels when they were old and healthy enough. Jasmine will release the weasels onto the couple’s property, where the weasels were most likely born.
