Picture this: a brave little dog named Dash, sitting motionless, eyes locked in a silent showdown with a massive mountain lion.
This tense scene unfolded at Sarah Bole’s home in Colorado, nestled between Grand Lake and Granby, as she returned from work around 5 pm.
The dramatic encounter was captured on video, showing Dash, completely still, intently watching the giant cat through the glass patio doors.
Sarah’s voice, shaky with fear, is heard in the background, pleading, “Dash get back!” But Dash, unfazed, remains rooted to the spot, his tail wagging in defiance.
The little dog refused to budge from his spot at the door.
Sarah had just come home to find Dash, utterly captivated by the mountain lion, staring it down from behind the safety of the glass doors.
Despite her trembling voice and repeated calls, Dash stood his ground, bravely facing the wild visitor.
After what must have felt like an eternity but was nearly three minutes, the mountain lion, seemingly bored or uninterested, began to walk away.
Sarah’s relief is palpable as she exclaims, “Dear God, he’s big.”
Only then does Dash start barking, now that the lion has retreated.
Sarah quickly hushes him, worried that the noise might draw the lion back.
Sarah shared this chilling footage on Facebook, captioning it with a mix of humor and disbelief: “I came home from work tonight and walked in to see this on the patio. Watch the whole thing as the lion taps the glass. Pardon my language and shaking voice. I was s****ing my pants.”
The video struck a chord on social media, with one user, Kristin Bergren McDuffee, commenting, “That was an amazing video. I can’t believe how still your dog was the entire time. I’m guessing you don’t let him out at night by himself!”
To which Sarah replied, acknowledging Dash’s shock: “I think he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He was sitting like that when I walked in the door from work.”
In a lighter vein, Sarah joked about selling her hot tub following this close encounter.
The video highlighted Dash’s unwavering focus, not moving a muscle until the mountain lion left.
This incident comes just six months after another close encounter in Utah, where a hiker, Jared Smith, was stalked by a mountain lion.
He managed to escape unharmed, following expert advice on dealing with such encounters: standing tall, maintaining eye contact, and backing away slowly without turning your back to the animal.
Mountain lion attacks are rare but not unheard of.
In the past 100 years in North America, there have been 126 attacks, 27 of which were fatal.
Just last year, 107 mountain lions were killed for suspected attacks on pets or livestock.
