What happens to stray dogs after they’ve been rescued?

How do they cope with their new lives? How did the dogs and the family adjust to this new dynamic?

Cooper, Trixi, and Bruno were all stray dogs who were photographed sleeping on a discarded mattress on Christmas Eve 2021.

Ruffstart Rescue (RSR) found them and, through a lot of talks and collaborations, they were able to get the three dogs into foster homes immediately.

At first, the rescuers had a challenge securing the three dogs.

Trixi and Bruno were rescued on the same day but Cooper escaped the rescuers. He didn’t trust that the humans (the rescuers) had good intentions so he did what he could to survive.

The rescuers wouldn’t find him until two months later.

They’re not quite sure how Cooper survived the Minnesota winter by himself.

But it most likely made Cooper realize being with these humans must be better than the harsh winter season. So when they came back and found him, he was already ready and jumped into their van and onto his new life.

The rescue was good timing for the dogs as well.

When the vet performed a medical check-up on them, they discovered that all three would need to have one leg amputated.

This would help them be healthy and stay healthy to find their forever homes. Eventually, the three dogs went from foster home to their forever home.

One year later, Ruffstart Rescue received an update on the three dogs. They first heard from Cooper’s family.

“From living in a dump on the reservation, having his leg amputated, and now enjoying his first camping week. Cooper, our foster fail, loves to swim, boat rides, and everything about camping,” RSR wrote on their Facebook post.

Their followers loved the update and wondered what had happened to Trixi and Bruno as well.

Well, Cooper’s family, including his human mom, Brenda Heitschmidt, helped track down the other two dogs. RSR is proud to report that they are doing great as well.

“Bruno’s family said he is so easy going and happy to be in a home, and Trixi seems to do well but is a little more tippy than the boys. We believe the boys protected her,” Brenda reported to The Dodo.

The human family of the three dogs arranged to have the three dogs unite for a reunion.

And the dogs and their family had a great time at the reunion!

It was simply great to see how the dogs’ life changed in a year. They went from sleeping in a dump to sleeping in a house filled with love for the dogs.

Brenda had so much love for Cooper.

“He is a perfect dog,” Brenda shared. “Many will say how lucky he is to be with us, however, we feel we are truly the lucky ones.”

We’re just so glad Ruffstart Rescue found these three dogs and their forever homes.
