Every dog is a gift from up above, but there’s one in particular who has loads of personality: Smile.
This pint-sized rescue dog carries a name that perfectly captures her ever-present cheerful grin.
But behind that grin lies a tale of hardship.
Born amidst the chaos of a hoarding situation in Tijuana, Mexico, Smile yearned for the warmth of a loving touch for years.
Yet, when she was finally rescued by No Dog Left Behind (NDLB), her joy was evident.
She welcomed her saviors with a radiant smile, as if she’d known them forever.
Stephanie Easley, the operations manager at NDLB, couldn’t help but gush, to The Dodo:
“She made the intake team fall madly in love.”
Smile had been through a lot.
Before her life took a turn for the better with NDLB, Smile was one of 24 dogs saved by the At-Choo Foundation in California.
Each of these dogs bore the scars of a painful skin ailment (Smile’s wasn’t quite as bad).
The teeny dog’s resilience shone through.
When her tale reached NDLB in Minnesota, they felt an instant connection.
The group wrote a Facebook post that explained:
“We heard her story, we saw her pictures, and we fell in love with the hope we saw in her eyes. Smile was destined to join our rescue.”
Transitioning from California to Minnesota wasn’t easy for Smile.
Assisted by Mutt Mutt Engine, she began her journey with hesitation, showing signs of fear.
But once she felt safe and secure, her trust began to blossom.
“Once she was out of the van and not in a position of feeling backed into a corner, she was much better,” Easley told The Dodo. “She curled up in a ball and laid there, just watching the volunteers work.”
Even though her skin condition required isolation, it didn’t deter the team from pouring love onto her.
And Smile? She responded with her namesake grin.
I mean, how do you not fall head over heels seeing a beautiful smile like this?
Recognizing Smile’s need for a nurturing environment, Easley stepped in as her foster mom.
Their bond grew stronger each day, and there were of course lots of smiles from both the pooch and her foster mom.
“The genuine love in her eyes is what makes her the most special dog I’ve ever met. They’re expressive … you know exactly what she’s thinking or feeling just by looking at them.”
While Easley treasures their bond, she knew Smile deserved a forever home tailored just for her.
And sure enough, Smile’s enchanting aura drew in families eager to adopt – and after she healed, that dream came true.
Today, she’s living her best life in a loving forever home. And yes, she’s still smiling!
