How far are you willing to go to protect your dogs?
We all love our dogs, don’t we? And we are willing to go above and beyond just to ensure their safety and welfare. However, a sane person wouldn’t dare go up against a humongous mama bear, let alone shove it like you really are asking for a fight.
You can call her “crazy” but that’s exactly what a 17-year-old girl from Bradbury, California named Hailey Morinico, did on an afternoon Memorial Day weekend. Some of you might call it reckless, while some people might call it heroic.
Unwanted wild visitors.
As of this writing, the population of bears in California is conservatively estimated to be between 30,000 and 40,000. Having one of these fierce wild beasts is already expected and that’s what happened to the Morinico’s residence that day.
In a spine-chilling clip caught by the family’s home security camera, a bear together with her two cubs was spotted casually strolling on top of their low-rise concrete fence. The dogs immediately started barking as soon as they saw their wild intruders.
A heart-stopping encounter.
When the largest dog came in close enough to the bear family, mama bear launched three swipes at the pooch’s face. The biggest dog ran away leaving the three tiny dogs defenseless from the then angry mammal.
When Hailey saw the bear trying to grab her mother’s service dog, she quickly ran towards it and shoved it off of their fence. After that, she scooped one dog and then commanded the rest to go inside. She then ran inside their house to secure the safety of their dogs and, of course, her own life.
Talking about a person’s adrenaline rush, this teenage girl obviously had it gushing through her veins at that very moment.
Her protective instincts may have subconsciously pushed her to do that scary altercation against a perhaps, hungry mama bear.
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s a bear and it is taking my dog. It is lifting it up off the ground,’” she said. “In that split second, I decided to push the bear, like it was nothing, apparently.”
“I didn’t want to know what would happen if the bear hurt her or even took her, so I had to do what I had to do.”
Luckily, all their dogs were unharmed and the brave teen only suffered a sprained finger and a scraped knee from that incident. Despite what she did, Hailey warned everyone else and said, “Do not push bears and do not get close to bears. You do not want to get unlucky. I just happened to come out unscathed.”
Just imagine if the bear fell right inside their yard, things could’ve ended differently.
That’s why experts, under any circumstance, don’t recommend confronting any type of bear. But since the number of bears is ballooning in the state, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife suggests staying away from these large mammals. If they happen to be on your premise, go to a safe place and call 911 for help.
Hailey was indeed lucky that things didn’t end up bloody on that day. Nonetheless, she’s indeed worthy to be called a hero for her unparalleled bravery in protecting their dogs.
