Imagine swimming with millions of jellyfish. If they didn’t sting, it would be pretty magical, right? The lucky snorkeler in this video was able to do just that.
One snorkeler was able to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity of swimming with millions of beautiful jellyfish. So, where does this magical place exist? You’ll need to take a long flight to Jellyfish Lake on the tiny South Pacific island group of Palau.
Jellyfish Lake is a marine lake on a small island called Eil Malk, which is part of the Rock Islands in Palau. They are a group of small, rocky, and generally uninhabited islands that have over 70 marine lakes in total. None of which are as special as Jellyfish Lake.
Every single day, millions of golden jellyfish migrate horizontally across the lake.
There are also moon jellyfish in Jellyfish Lake. However, they do not make the same daily horizontal migration as the golden jellyfish. At night, the moon jellyfish migrate to the surface of the water to presumably feed. It’s the golden jellyfish that make a fascinating trip every single day.
Scientists have found that the golden jellyfish start migrating from one side of the lake to the other, and back again, beginning in the early morning and ending at sunset; always ending their excursion on the western end of the lake.
Although the jellyfish have stinging cells, they aren’t powerful enough to cause harm to humans. This allows fortunate tourists the opportunity to experience a truly unique moment.
In the incredible video below, you witness the snorkeler dip beneath the surface of the aqua green water — the view is absolutely breathtaking. They are completely surrounded by millions of golden jellyfish (which have more of a pinkish hue than gold.)
Gently floating in the water, the delicate jellyfish pulsate and glide in a hypnotic and mesmerizing way. In every direction, there are millions of jellyfish as far as the eye can see. It’s a view that very few people will ever get to see and experience.
Tourists can access the lake as long as they have the required pass. If you can afford the pricey plane ticket to Palau, you can score a 10-day pass for just $100.
The amazing video below looks like something out of a dream. A beautiful reminder of how wondrous and fascinating our world can be.
