Mona, a Staffordshire terrier, has had the absolute worst luck when it comes to finding the perfect family to love her. Just when she thinks she’s found her forever home, something seems to fall apart.
Mona was adopted after spending 420 long days at the animal shelter. Sadly, she was returned the next day because the other dogs in the household “didn’t like her.”
Things started to look up again when Mona was once again adopted the very next day. However, unbelievably, she was once again returned to the shelter. This time, the family’s youngest daughter turned out to be allergic to the sweet dog.
“She was returned for no fault of her own, and that’s what makes it a little bit more emotional,” Brenda Arceo, adoption manager for The Animal Foundation, a shelter in Las Vegas, told The Dodo. “When we first saw her come back into the intake area, she was actually very happy and wagging her tail. But once she realized that she was back where she was, she kind of sat down and looked sad.”
Mona was first surrendered in 2017 when she was just 5-years-old. Her family was moving and were unable to take her with them.
Now that Mona has become so well-known at the shelter, they’ve ended up falling head over heels for her. She’s a bit on the bashful side, but it’s clear that she has a heart of gold.
“She’s a little shy and timid when you first meet her, but once she gets to know you, she definitely does come around,” Arceo said. “She loves getting kisses.”
Despite being a sweet, affectionate dog, her shyness would often cause people to pass over her at the shelter.
“She’s a little bit on the shy side … and she likes to hide in the backyard portion of her kennel, so people don’t ask to take her out,” Arceo said.
What’s even more deplorable is that the staff has heard people say that Mona is ‘too old,’ not affectionate enough,’ and ‘not pretty.’ Kelly Leahy, communications manager for The Animal Foundation was heartbroken after hearing these statements.
“We tried to refute those myths in short videos on Facebook,” Leahy said. “We show her being affectionate and wonderful, and looking active and certainly not an old dog.”
Since Mona has now been surrendered three times, the staff wants to make sure that her next adoptive family is going to truly be her forever home. The sweet girl deserves to be with the perfect match for her.
“An active family would be good for her since she does enjoy walks,” Arceo said. “It would obviously have to be a family with no other dogs since she’s so picky with who her doggie friends are,” Arceo said. “The last family had small kids, and she loves them … so I think she would do well in a home with a family that has children.”
The Animal Foundation is absolutely certain that whoever decides to take a chance on her will become absolutely smitten.
“She’s so loving, and she wants to be loved,” Arceo said. “I think that’s my favorite part about her. She’s a great dog, and she definitely deserves a loving family.”
