If you’re a mom, you wouldn’t hesitate to say you’d do anything for your kids.
But how far would this really go? Would you put your life on the line? For most moms, the answer would be a definite “yes”.
It’s not just us humans who forge overwhelming emotional bonds with our little ones, either.
Maternal instinct is very much a thing in the animal kingdom. Moms in the wild are fiercely protective of their little ones, perhaps even more so than humans.
Elephants, kangaroos, octopuses, and pandas tend to have the most caring, protective moms out there.
But looking away from the wild a little closer to home, dog moms would give any mom a run for her money.
Just like with human moms, powerful hormones are released in a dog mom’s body after she has given birth, which is what makes her so devoted to looking after her little ones.
It’s quite common for dog moms to want to keep her babies in sight at all times, especially during their first few weeks on earth.
So imagine how it must feel to be taken away from your babies – and to not know if you’ll ever see them again.
One video, featuring a stray pup in Taft, California, shows just how devoted a dog mom can be.
The border collie mix was discovered roaming the streets, looking scared and starving.
She was spotted by the Watkins family, who coaxed her into their car, making the quick decision that they would take her home, feed her – and invite her into their family.
Nikki Jo Watkins, who rescued the pup, said she was “fine” but “hungry” on the day of her rescue.
She added:
“She ate and ate and ate, and then she slept. She just looked very comfortable while she slept, and very happy.”
But as the night went on, the collie, who Jo named Gypsy, started to show signs that something wasn’t right.
She stood on all fours, unable to sit down or get comfortable, and Jo realized that the pup was clearly missing something.
The next morning, Gypsy escaped from Jo’s home.
Now feeling committed to keeping the stray safe, the Watkins family scoured the local area, hoping to catch a sign of Gypsy.
Jo was convinced that Gypsy had escaped for a reason – perhaps she had a sick friend that needed the family’s help too?
So when Jo stopped and heard the “faintest little whimper”, she thought she’d struck gold.
What she never could have expected, however, was to find seven tiny puppies – Gypsy’s puppies.
All seven pups were discovered in a dirt hole. Gypsy had put tumbleweed over them in an attempt to protect them from the elements.
It was a heartbreaking sight.
The Watkins had found Gypsy moments before, so they loaded the pups up in their car with their mamma, who immediately laid down and started nursing.
Once she was reunited with her babies, Gypsy stared into Jo’s eyes, almost as if she was saying thank you.
The faithful mom and pups are now thriving in Jo’s home. The pups would one day be heading off to their own happy homes – but Gypsy would be staying with the Watkins.
