Pit bulls are sweet dogs, but unfortunately, there are many negative stereotypes about them. Pit bulls are said to be ‘aggressive’ and even ‘scary.’ But typically, this isn’t true. Pit bulls are as loving and loyal as any other dog.

A pit bull named Hero is the perfect example of how incredible these dogs can be.

Hero was just another stray dog, trying to make his way on the streets of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Then, he heard what sounded like a struggle down the street, and decided to go investigate.

Hero found a man attacking a woman with a knife. Even though he had never seen the woman before, his protective instincts kicked in and he immediately put himself between the attacker and his victim.

The brave pit bull was stabbed five times for his efforts.

Two police officers, Sergeant Timothy Clay and Officer Daniel Seeley, responding to the incident knew the stray might not make it. Even though they knew the dog had no owner who could pay for medical care, they recognized a hero when they saw one – and that’s how the pup got his name.

“I don’t think we could have let that dog suffer and die. We felt like we needed to get that dog some help after what it had been through,” Officer Clay told WATE.

Hero almost passed away twice during surgery.

His attacker had viciously inflicted several deep wounds, and the dog was fighting for his life.

Thanks to the timely intervention of the officers, Hero was able to pull through. If they hadn’t gotten him to the vet as soon as they did, he probably wouldn’t have made it.

When Carla Welch heard Hero’s story, she knew she was in a unique position to help.

Welch owns pit bull rescue foundation Fighting For The Bullys. Through online fundraising, she was able to help organize support to pay for Hero’s medical costs.

“Most pit bulls are really protective,” Welch told Inside Edition. “They can sense danger and when someone gets loud, it perks their attention.”

Welch says that even after everything he went through, the seven-year-old pit bull is still friendly and social.

Hero’s story quickly made the news, and it soon went viral. Everyone was amazed by the lengths that Hero went to save a woman in need. Soon, adoption applications started rolling in.

In the end, a couple named Sara and David Simpson adopted sweet Hero. The couple also had two other dogs, and Hero was so happy to have new friends to play with.

“We are really blessed to be taking this baby and making him family,” Sara Simpson wrote in a Facebook post. “Adjustments are going well.”
