It is sad to see that many irresponsible owners abandon their pets the moment they feel they can not take care of them anymore, and it is more devastating that the poor pets have to suffer because of their bad and impulsive decisions.
Mama has been living alone on an orchard and it got the attention of people online.
Mama is a pit bull who was abandoned by her owners at an orchard in a rural area near Ducor, California. She was able to survive every day by sitting in a corner, waiting for kind passersby who were willing to share some leftovers. At night, she would sleep under the solar panels. Luckily some people were kind enough to check on her and feed her some food.
Mama got a lot of attention on the internet as people started sharing their worries and spreading awareness about her on social media, which started around April 2019. A lot of concerned netizens took matters into their own hands by scouring around the area to rescue her. However, Mama was quite the elusive dog as anyone who approached her could not even come close to catching her.
Eventually, Safefurr Place Rescue noticed Mama and attempted to rescue her.
It was late December 2019 when Danny Spanks at Safefurr Place Rescue became aware of Mama’s situation and decided to try to get her away from there. Spanks went to the orchard and did everything he could to win Mama’s trust.
Getting Mama’s trust was a slow process but Spanks sacrificed some of his time every day just to visit her in the orchard. Spanks did a lot, like improvising a temporary shelter for Mama made out of mattresses and a couple of box springs and leaving some food by her dog house every day.
Spanks did a routine where he fed Mama by as he sat away from her at a certain distance. Every single day, he reduced the distance between them little by little until Mama could learn to become comfortable with having Spanks’ presence around. It took a couple of months for Mama to get used to sitting close to Spank as she chowed down the food. A little more time after that, she learned how to be playful around him.
It took four months of hard work to proceed to the final operation.
For four months, Spanks would meet Mama at the same spot every day so that she could spend her day eating Spanks’ food and playing with him as they walk around the orchard. One day, Spanks made the call to proceed to the final phase of the rescue. He got a permit to install a trap on the orchard and waited for some time to get Mama to go inside it.
Mama is currently adjusting to her new life with Spanks being there for her.
A couple of days later, Mama and Spanks went for a walk around the orchard for the last time before he would execute the rescue operation. Luckily, Sissy McClenny and Angela Perdikis from Saving K9 Search and Rescue were there to assist Spanks.
The team succeeded in extracting Mama from the orchard and they carried her to Spanks’ home. It was tough for Mama but now, she is doing her best to adjust to her new life with Spanks who is always there for her every step of the way.
