What would you do if you knew that a shelter dog was in danger of being put to sleep?
It is sad to think about, right? No one wants to put a dog to sleep unless it will end their suffering. Veterinarians choose to euthanize a dog if they are terminally ill, and the owner prefers to gently “put them to sleep” rather than continue to suffer.
However, a sad reality is that that’s not the only reason why vets euthanize a dog. Other shelters or homes often decide to do that if their facility is full. Most of the time, it is the oldest dog that has to go.
Angel was one of those dogs who were about to get put to sleep.
She was in their shelter for quite a while, and since there was a ban on pitbulls in Sioux City, where Angel was located, she was not open for adoption. When Karma Rescue was full, they had to give her up. It was difficult to transfer her to another shelter because she was fierce.
Angel always showed her teeth and would often growl at anyone who came near her. She also was not properly trained. Rande from Karma Rescue wanted to save her but was scared of Angel’s disposition.
She called her friend Wade, who was a senior volunteer and behavioral specialist.
Rande had wanted to take Angel out of her kennel, but she was not courageous enough. Slowly but surely, Wade was able to leash Angel and take her out for a walk.
She loved it! It looked like it was her first time being out in the open. Angel turned out to be the sweetest pittie out there. She rolled on command and let Wade rub her belly. Rande was happy to finally see this side of Angel.
However, Rande received sad news about Angel. She was about to be put down.
She wanted to save Angel from that fate, but she couldn’t since there was a ban on pitbulls. No one could adopt her, and even she could not take her home.
The least she could do was to take Angel out of the shelter and bring her to the veterinary clinic so she could hold her paws as she drifts into nothingness.
The day finally came; Rande took Angel to the vet.
If there was something that Rande strongly believed, it was that Angel was meant to be somewhere safe. She had hope that this dog that was an hour away from being put down would be saved.
Rande sent out a text message to Hug Hearts Foundation in Los Angeles even if she knew she couldn’t do anything anymore. She still texted them to let them know Angel was about to be euthanized in an hour.
It was an answered prayer, and Angel was blessed with a miracle.
The foundation replied that they would take her. Rande was over the moon. She took Angel to Los Angeles and saved a dog’s life.
Angel became so much better, with a life that she longed for and deserved. She’s now in a wonderful forever home with a loving family.
