We hear many stories of pet owners going above and beyond to help their beloved animals.
A quick Google search pulls up dozens of stories like “man saves pet from alligator,” “man saves pet from train,” and “man saves pet from fire.”
You might remember the story of a Florida man saving his dog from an alligator a couple of years ago.
This video is the opposite of these stories.
The man saving the dog in this video is not the owner of the dog in distress.
Instead, a stranger went into the water to save someone else’s dog.
In Lenexa, Kansas, a woman was playing with her pet.
She was throwing a tennis ball to the frozen lake and her dog, as dogs are expected to do, ran into the lake to fetch the ball.
Unfortunately, the ice was not thick or strong enough to hold the dog, and the dog fell into the icy water.
The dog started thrashing around, trying to get out of the cold water and return to safety.
However, the dog couldn’t pull itself out of the water or swim to shore.
The worst part of this story is that the owner did not even stand up when her dog was trapped in the icy water.
She continued to sit on a bench and kept on telling bystanders that the dog was fine.
However, it was clear to the many people around her that the dog was the opposite of fine.
The owner watched her dog unsuccessfully trying to get out of the lake.
This continued for about three to five minutes before one of the people watching the dog struggle went into the water to help the poor dog.
The man walked and crawled his way to where the dog was stuck.
He broke the ice around him to make a path for the dog to swim back to safety.
Finally, he reached the dog and helped him swim back towards the short.
Three other caring strangers went into the freezing cold water to help the man and the dog get out safely.
Unfortunately, the dog’s owner was not one of them.
She continued to stay on the short and watch other people rescue her pet.
When they all made it out of the icy lake, the people on the shore clapped and cheered for them.
In the video, you’ll notice that are a lot of dogs hanging out by the shore.
It’s safe to assume that many people there are pet owners themselves, which made the frustrating behavior of the poor dog’s owner even more incredible.
The bystanders were not happy with the dog’s owner, and you could hear them share their thoughts on the video.
“Did you enjoy that? Watching your dog out there suffer?”
“You just watch your dog go out there and get frozen? Why are you relying on other people?” another concerned owner asked her.
While we’re happy the dog made it out of the icy water safely care of a kind stranger, we can’t help but share our disappointment with the other bystanders.
If you are one of the tens of millions of people who own a dog, we’re optimistic you’re more like the Good Samaritan who saved a stranger’s dog, and not the pet owner who watched from the sidelines as her dog was suffering in the cold water.
