Squirrels are crazy, ruthless, and fearless creatures. They’re also a lot stronger than you think. I once left a piece of corn out on my ledge thinking that the squirrels or birds would pick off the kernels and eat them.
Nope!
A squirrel came along in less than two minutes, grabbed the entire piece of corn, ran away with it, then scurried up a tree with the entire ear of corn. It was crazy. The piece of corn was literally bigger than he was.
So, it’s no surprise to me that there are some squirrels out there who have cultivated the ability to steal things. The Kim family from Toronto, Canada learned that the culprit behind a rash of candy thefts was none other than a sticky-fingered squirrel.
They realized that the squirrels would sneak in when their door was left open. Dozens of candy bars had gone missing from Luke’s Grocery and Snack Bars over the years and the family had no idea why.
Cindy Kim told The Dodo that it started about five years ago when her father started feeding the birds outside his store.
He didn’t realize that this was helping to bring thieves right to his door.
“The squirrels started coming and eating the sunflower seeds and such,” Cindy told The Dodo. “I suppose they started getting used to coming to our store for food. But those seeds don’t last forever. So I think they started robbing us.”
She didn’t actually have to think about it too much more because she actually caught a squirrel in the act during a time when about 40 chocolate candy bars had gone missing.
“We don’t catch them all the time,” Cindy said. “We’re guessing that they come and go and we don’t even know about it.They would look outside and catch a squirrel hanging out in front of the store. It’s difficult to catch them in the act.”
Cindy says that these little suckers are so fast you can’t even chase after them to get the bar back.
She says there have been fewer heists since the weather has gotten colder and her parents are trying to find a way to defend themselves against this theft.
So, if you ever see some candy bars coming out of a tree, you’ll know why! Watch this clever squirrel in the act of stealing some chocolate in the video below.
