How could someone do such a thing?

Emmie is a very special puppy. She’s 5-months-old and was born with a condition which prevents her from straightening her front legs and her spine is twisted, making it very difficult for her to walk for very long. She requires lots of love and care, but sadly, her owner gave her neither.

The RSPCA received a call about a dog left behind in a bar, they assumed it would be like any other rescue – but they didn’t expect to find a dog like Emmie.

Inspector Lauren Bailey showed up at the bar and was heartbroken to see the Chihuahua-Yorkie scared and all alone. It’s assumed that Emmie most likely developed her deformities because of overbreeding.

“Tiny” dogs are becoming increasingly popular, causing breeders to breed extremely small dogs, marketing them as “teacup” breeds. Often times, breeders are completely unaware as to the long-term issues this can cause.

“Deformities can also be the result of bad nutrition and a poor start in life, with the mum and pups not getting what they needed during the most important first weeks and months of the pup’s life, leading to poor development,” Lisa Hens, a dog welfare expert with the RSPCA, said in a press release.

Due to Emmie’s health condition, the staff at the RSPCA shelter were afraid that it would be hard to find her the perfect forever home. However, she already had already stolen someone’s heart.

An animal collection officer with the RSPCA named Kate Wright had caught wind of Emmie and her story – she knew right away that she wanted to help the little dog. Kate had recently lost a dog and she, along with her other dog Sapphire, was struggling to get over the loss. When she heard about Emmie – she knew it was the perfect fit for them.

At first, Kate and her family decided to foster Emmie to see how a life with her would be. They helped her overcome and cope with her disabilities, but most of all, they brought out her wonderful, loving personality. The family absolutely fell in love with her.

“I cannot believe how happy and loving this little girl is when she has been so badly treated and let down by humans,” Kate said. “She was so skinny and really weak when she arrived here. But she’s a little fighter and has a smashing little character. She’s really made herself at home and loves Saff and my other new foster, Ruby.”

Although Emmie struggles with walking, she loves going out with her family. When she gets tired, her parents will put her in a special sling and carry her.

“That way she can still enjoy the fresh air and be with the whole family — we’d hate to think she was getting left out,” Kate explained.

Emmie couldn’t be happier in her new home and Kate and Sapphire couldn’t be happier either. The sweet, little dog helped them deal with the loss of their previous dog and lifted their spirits. Sapphire and Emmie were best friends, so it was clear that she was going to be there to stay. The family decided to officially adopt her.

“She’ll never go hungry again and will also have a cozy sofa to curl up on in the evenings,” Kate said. “She probably won’t live into old age but she will now have a very happy, healthy life with us for as long as possible.”
